Description: | This recording was made at the Southwest Island community’s cemetery in Echang, Ngerekebesang Island, Koror, PW. Sisma Andrew took Barbara W. Black and Peter W. Black to the cemetery for a walk around. The recording begins as we walk up the final part of the hill to the cemetery. Sisma was asked to speak in Tobian and does so although her speech is interspersed with English. Peter W. Black occasionally converses with Sisma in Tobian. Their conversation is mostly about the dead and where (here in this cemetery, or at the Mission in Koror, or on Tobi) they are buried. They talk about which people are buried in the same grave. They also talk about the gardens of the Southwest Island women which used to be in this area. This recording is very choppy and the audio is terrible; it was made with the Sony video camera handheld. The best way to listen is to watch the individual original MTS files. A more complete discussion of this session is included here at tb20-04063-faa-2014-05-21.pdf. A photograph of Sisma Andrew and Peter W. Black in the cemetery is included here as tb20-03974-faa-2014-05-21.jpg. Photograph by Barbara W. Black. Recorded: 2014-05-21.
Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
