| Description: | This recording was made by Peter W. Black on May 25, 2014 at Lorenso Simeon’s house in Eang, Koror, Palau. The recording consists of two parts. For the first four minutes Lorenso’s son, Jeffery, reads the first paragraph of the Tobian language version of the Documenting Tobi Language May 2914 Project Update from a handout provided to HOPE Hatohobei Organization for People and Environment, a local NGO and the host of this project. | Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk. | ||
