Description:This is perhaps the most widely known and frequently told zapal among the Bunaq Lamaknen today. It appears to be borrowed from the Tetun. The zapal is one version among several that tells the story of the very competitive friendship between Orel (Monkey) and Zul (Mouse) in which Monkey is repeatedly proven stupid and Mouse clever. Mouse tricks Monkey into a competition where he gets burnt to death in a fire. This version is more extended than most and continues with Mouse gloating about having killed the stupid Monkey. This in turn causes the Monkey's family to seek revenge. Mouse tricks the Monkey family into thinking that he is a hiding in a pond when they see his reflection from his hiding spot over the pond. They drink the water from the pond in order to extract Mouse, but they explode from all the water and die. Mouse wins.
Bunaq "zapal" is an endangered form of fairy tale-like folk story traditionally told in the family group at night before going to sleep. With the arrival of electricity and television in Bunaq villages, the traditional night time forum for telling "zapal" has been lost. As a result, children know little or nothing of this aspect of Bunaq culture; only elderly community members and some adults know individual tales from the vast canon of "zapal" that the Bunaq once had. The "zapal" encapsulate and elucidate aspects of the Bunaq world view and their environment. The documentation of "zapal" therefores provide an unique perspective on the traditional livelihoods and beliefs of the Bunaq for researchers.
