Once upon a time, there was a wealthy man in a village. His wife was Ja Yut. They had a daughter. One day, the chief from another village came to the rich man. In the past, there was a tradition among the Kachin people of arranging marriages between families of the same social rank or giving their daughters in marriage to wealthy men. A hereditary chief from a village went to a wealthy man and offered his daughter to him in marriage. His daughter had an ugly face, big eyes, and a fat body. She was mean and bad. The rich man's wife, Ja Yut, was kind and clever. She was skilled at weaving, which was a Kachin tradition. She was skilled at household chores as well, and she was a beautiful lady. Then, the rich man married Ning Hpe Jan, who was the daughter of the chief from another village. One day, Ja Yut was combing her hair after taking a shower. Since she was rich, she used a gold comb to comb her hair. When Ning Hpe Jan saw it, she was tempted to take it. She said to Ja Yut, "Sister, let me comb your hair." Ja Yut said, "That's okay. I can do it by myself." However, Ning Hpe Jan insisted, "Let me help you. I will comb your hair." Then Ja Yut allowed her to do it. While Ning Hpe Jan was combing Ja Yut's hair, she intentionally dropped the gold comb through the bamboo floor onto the ground. She said to Ja Yut, "Sister, please go pick it up. I cannot bend down." Then Ja Yut said, "That's okay. I still have another gold comb. Use it to comb my hair." But Ning Hpe Jan said, "No, let's just use this one. Please, go pick it up." She kept asking Ja Yut to pick up the comb. Ja Yut remained patient and went down to the ground to retrieve it. In fact, Ning Hpe Jan was plotting something. She poured the boiling water she had prepared onto Ja Yut, who was downstairs. Ja Yut ran upstairs with severe scalds and was in great pain. Her husband hired doctors to treat her, but she could not be cured no matter how hard they tried. In the end, she passed away. The husband couldn't let her go, but she died. They still had a daughter. Ja Yut became a dove after she died. It always flew to the trees near the rich man's house and made a sound like "tut tu tu." Meanwhile, Ning Hpe Jan was weaving the patterns on clothes that Ja Yut used to make. She was not good at weaving, but she tried. At that moment, the dove said, "Weave patterns, tut tu tu. Now weave, tut tu tu." When Ning Hpe Jan heard what the dove said, she realized that it was Ja Yut. She thought to herself, "It is Ja Yut. How do I kill it?" The dove, who had been Ja Yut in her past life, usually talked with her daughter. The daughter also knew that it was her mother. Then Ning Hpe Jan made a plan. Pretending that she was craving dove meat, she said to her husband, "I want to eat dove meat. Please catch it for me." The husband had no idea that the dove was his first wife, so he caught it and cooked it for Ning Hpe Jan. Ning Hpe Jan didn't share any meat with the first wife's daughter; she gave her only soup. However, the daughter did not eat the soup either. She secretly poured it through a hole because she knew that it was her mother, so she did not eat it. After the dove died, it became a tortoise. It stayed in a natural pool that existed east of the village. The dove knew what it would become in its next life before it died, so it told its daughter, "I will become a tortoise after I die. I will live there." Therefore, the daughter knew that her mother had become a tortoise and was staying in that pool east of the village. She always went there to meet her mother. She always looked happy when she came back home, and Ning Hpe Jan eventually noticed it. Therefore, she ordered her servants to watch there. They saw that the girl was talking with the tortoise, so they reported to her about it. Then Ning Hpe Jan pretended to be sick again. She didn't eat anything and pretended to be seriously ill. Then her husband was worried and said, "Ja Yut also passed away. I can't let the same thing happen to you." He asked her, "What do you want to eat? Tell me." She said, "I want to eat the tortoise meat." He asked her, "Where can we get the tortoise?" She said, "I heard that there's a tortoise in a pond on the eastern side of the village. I want to eat it, so I asked the servants to find one, and they said there is one." He commanded his servants, "Catch that tortoise from that pond, no matter what." The daughter heard what her father said, so she went to the pond quickly and told her mother about it. She said, "Mom, hide somewhere. Run away from this pond." Then the tortoise hid somewhere else. When the servants bailed the water out of the pond and searched for the tortoise, they couldn't find it anywhere. Then they said, "If the tortoise isn't here, let's search for it in the lower pond." However, the daughter told her mother just in time, so the tortoise was able to escape this time as well. The servants searched for the tortoise in that pond, but they couldn't find it. After three days, the daughter said, "Mom, they're going to drain the pond to find you. Run away from there!" But the tortoise said, "My daughter, it's okay. I don't want to continue living as a tortoise. I will let them catch me." The daughter cried a lot and went back home after hearing what her mother said. When the servants searched for the tortoise in that pond, they could catch it. They cooked it for Ning Hpe Jan. Ning Hpe Jan did not give the daughter any meat; she only gave her soup. The daughter refused to eat even a single piece because she knew it was her own mother. She secretly threw away the soup that her stepmother gave her. On the other hand, there was a grandmother and her grandson in a neighbouring village. They were farmers. They went to the fields to work every day. The tortoise became a lady after it died. She prepared food for the grandmother and her grandson every day. She also did all the household chores. The grandmother and her grandson wondered who cooked the food and cleaned the house. They asked their neighbours, "Who has been cooking for us? Everything is clean, and someone even starts the fire. Every time we come back from the fields, the house is already like this. Have you seen anyone coming into our house?" The neighbours said, "We don't see anyone going into your house." The grandson thought, "I need to catch whoever is doing this. I will hide and catch her." The next day, he and his grandmother went to the field. But he returned secretly and hid near the door. While he was watching, a beautiful young woman came out of a pumpkin. She cooked food, swept the floor, and cleaned the house. He saw her doing all the work. He thought to himself, "If I try to catch her now, she'll hide inside the pumpkin again." So he broke the pumpkin first and then caught the young woman. He asked her, "Who are you? Where are you from?" She said, "I am Ja Yut, the wife of the rich man from that village." Then, he and his grandmother sent her to the rich man's house. Ja Yut told her husband about her past lives as a dove and a tortoise, and how she had lived inside the pumpkin. Her husband was happy and welcomed her, saying, "Everything is all right now. I'm so glad you're back." He disliked Ning Hpe Jan because she was mean. He said to them, "One of you must die. Kill each other." However, Ja Yut was kind-hearted, so she said, "Let's not kill each other. I don't want either of us to die. Let's live together as we did before." But Ning Hpe Jan said, "No, we must fight.
