| Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I am about to tell you is well known throughout Kachin State. The title of the story is "Nine Suns and the Humans." During the time when humans were first created, humans also had tails. There were nine suns shining on the earth at that time. Therefore, humans and animals could not live peacefully because it was too hot. They couldn't go hunting or look for food, either. Then, humans and animals held a meeting to solve that problem. They discussed, "Let's drive these suns away from the earth!" They prepared weapons such as knives, axes, bows, and arrows to drive the suns away. They could successfully drive them away. The king of the suns kept all of his suns and closed the gate. Since that day, no single sun had shone on the earth. As days passed without the suns shining on the earth, humans began to feel cold. It became quite difficult for them to search for food. They were in great trouble. Then humans and animals held another meeting. They discussed, "The sun is really important to us. We need it. Let's go to the land of the Suns and apologize to the king. Let's ask him to return the sun to us." Then they went to the land of the Suns. However, the king of the Suns said, "You drove the suns away. We cannot return them to you unless you have something valuable to offer us. If you can offer us something valuable, I will open the gate and give you the sun." Then, they returned to the earth, gathered all the animals, and held another meeting. Humans said to all the animals, "Let's ask everyone to offer something as a tribute and present it to the king. Then he said he would open the gate and return the sun to us." They continued, "We will give our tails." They had tails in the past. It is said that our backbones are evidence that humans once had tails, which we gave up in exchange for the sun. In the past, horses had horns. But they gave their horns to buy the sun. That is why horses have no horns to this day. The cows and buffaloes gave up their upper teeth in exchange for the sun, which is why they do not have upper teeth today. Before buying the sun, the dog had horns. When it tried to lick the pounded rice from the mortar where people pounded rice, its horns got in the way, making it difficult to lick the rice. So it gave its horns to the goat. When they bought back the sun, the dog no longer had its horns. When the people said to it, "Take part in buying back the sun. Cut off your tail as your contribution." The dog said, "I need my tail to welcome my owners when they come home. I use my tail to wag and to show friendliness to my fellow dogs. I can't give up my tail to buy back the sun." It did not contribute to buying back the sun, so it always has to stick out its tongue when it is hot and sunny. Later, people said to the bat, "Contribute to buying back the sun. You must give something." The bat spread its wings and said, "I belong to the birds." Then the people said to the birds, "Birds, help us buy back the sun." But the bat replied, "I am not a bird. I belong to the mice." It did not make any contribution to buying back the sun. That is why it still lives in caves today. It also hides inside hollow bamboo. The chickens had excellent hearing, so the people said to them, "Because you can hear well, you will be the first to know when the sun rises. Tell the other animals and us when the sun rises." Then humans went to the land of the Suns and said to the king, "These are the gifts we are going to give you." The king said, "Alright. I will open the gate of the land of the Suns for you tomorrow. I will let one sun shine on the earth for you because you said that nine suns were too many for you." That is why only one sun shines on the Earth today. The next morning, the chickens waited for the sunrise in the east, where the Land of the Sun existed. They had sharp ears, so they listened for the sound of the sunrise. At that moment, the toad said, "I will wait and watch for the sunrise too." The humans said to it, "You didn't contribute anything to buying the Sun, so you can't watch the sunrise!" Then the toad turned its back and faced west. When the sun rose, the chickens called out, "Humans, the sun is rising!" The toad also shouted, "The sun is rising in the west, too! I can see it shining on the mountains." The humans said, "Since you didn't contribute anything to buying the sun, you can't watch the sunrise." They pinched it. That is why toads have rough skin today. Humans happily welcomed the sunlight when the chickens crowed. The reason why we can live peacefully with the sunlight is that we contributed to buying the sun in the past. I would like to end this short story here. Thank you very much.
