| Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was a farmer. He was a poor farmer. One day, a female elephant was searching for food in a forest. At that moment, she stepped on a spike and pricked her foot. She was in terrible pain and struggled to find food with her injured foot for two or three days. She cried in pain and had to walk on her other three legs. Then she went to the place where humans lived because she could no longer bear the pain. She went to the farmer to ask for help. The farmer saw the elephant and said, "What happened? You look like you are in pain." The elephant said, "My foot got pricked by a big spike." He pulled the spike out of the elephant's foot with all his strength. He applied herbs to the wound and treated it carefully. The elephant felt much better than before. She was very grateful to the farmer. She said to him, "I will work for you my whole life to show my gratitude." She lived there and worked for the farmer. One day, the elephant nearly died of old age. Before she died, she thought to herself, "I won't be able to work for him after I'm gone. I will go take my child." Therefore, she went to take her child. She said to her child, "My child, work for my lifesaver on behalf of me. I am about to die soon. You have to show your gratitude to them." Her child, the young elephant, was also grateful to the farmer and worked for him. The mother elephant and her child belonged to the king. The king and his servants searched everywhere for the baby elephant when it went missing. The farmer and his family usually put the young elephant's dung in the same place. One day, there was a flood. Then the elephant's dung floated away with the water. At that time, the king's servants were bathing in the water. They said, "My king, we saw the elephant's dung floating in the water." The king said, "Whose elephant dung is this? From which area did it come?" Then the servants picked up the dung from the water. They smelled the dung and soon realized it was from their missing elephant. They began searching for the elephant. In the end, they arrived at the farmer's family. When they found the young elephant, they said, "We are looking for you everywhere. Where is your mother elephant?" The young elephant said, "She is dead. My mother served the farmer who saved her life until the end of her life. She wants me to serve this family and work for them." The king told the young elephant to return to the palace. She said, "I don't want to go back. My mother told me to stay here and serve this family to repay their kindness." The king said, "Then I will give lots of gold and money to the farmer.
