Description: | Translation (Seng Pan) The story is about a widow and her son. Once upon a time, there was a widow and her son. The widow was already in her old age. Her husband also passed away. Therefore, she relied on her son for a living. Her son was not rich. He could only earn a small amount of money a day. As the widow became older, she suffered some illness. On the other hand, her son also worked as usual to feed her. One day, the old widow got seriously sick. The son felt sad and only took care of his mother. The next day, he went to work since his mother got better. When the son was away, the widow mortgaged the house without letting her son know. Even when her son came back from work, the widow didn't tell him about it. On a day, the mortgagor family came to their house and said, "If you cannot pay back our money within this week, we will take over your house." The widow felt depressed. So when her son arrived home, she was sitting with a depressing face. As the son saw his mother, he asked, "Mom. Why do you look so sad?" "Son. I've taken a loan from other. If we can't pay it back, we need to give our house. We will lose our house," the widow said. "Mom. Why don't you tell me earlier?" the son replied. "I'm afraid you will feel sad," the widow said. But the son didn't have any anger on his mother. "Mom. What should we do now?" the son asked. "The only property we have is this cow. Sell the cow and take back our house from them!" the widow said. "Mom. The cow is the only property we have. It isn't right to sell it," the son replied. "Let sell it first. When we have enough savings, we will surely buy another one," the widow said. Then the son didn't insist on his mother anymore. He went to the city to sell the cow. On the halfway, he was exhausted. Thus he sat down under a shade and took a short rest. At that moment, an old man approached him and said, "You are going to sell this cow, aren't you?" The son was surprised at how the old man knew it. "Yes, I will sell this cow. My mother and I have faced some difficulties. And we need to take back our house with the money we get from selling this cow. Therefore, I would like to sell it at a high price," the son replied. But the old man bought his cow with a bulging bag. He pulled the cow and left. The son thought the bag bulged with the money. When he opened it, he saw the bag was full of corn. "No, it isn't. I only asked you for the money. Take this and just give me the money!" the son shouted and turned his back. But the old man had already disappeared. The son returned home sadly. When he arrived home, his mother asked, "Son. How much money did you get?" "Mom. I didn't get money. I was only given this bag, and it's filled with something. I also didn't know," the son replied. The mother untied the bag and saw corn. "Why did you sell our cow with this?" the mother asked. "Mom. I really didn't have any ideas. When I said I was going to sell the cow, the old man just gave me this bag. I thought it was a bag full of money. Therefore, I took it. But when I found out it was not money, I called him, but he disappeared," the son replied. "Ok then. Let it be! We can't do anything now!" the mother said. Then, the widow and her son spread the corn in their front yard. The next day when they woke up, there grew a huge cornstalk. They wondered what kind of tree it was. There also fruited a corn. So, the widow let her son pick it. The son cut it with a sword. When they shucked the corn, there was gold inside. From that day on, they became wealthy, and they also helped the needy people. This is the end. Transcription (Lu Awng) Ya ngai hkai na maumwi a gabaw gaw gaida jan hte kasha a lam re.
