Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I'm going to tell is about a boy and a witch (Hpyi Hpai Num). Once upon a time, there was a married couple in a village. They had one child. But their child was tiny. So, they were embarrassed to show their child to the neighbours. Then, the mother told her husband, "Let's abandon him." The father agreed with his wife and decided to abandon their son. They made a box and put the child in it. And they threw it into the river. The box drifted downriver. The witch who was taking a bath near the river saw the box. So, she took it out of water and saved the baby. She raised him well. Every day, she worked on the farm. At that time, she left the child at home. She told her son, "Don't go outside while I'm going to the farm." But the child visited his friends while she was away. When the witch came back, her son found that she looked different. When she came back in the morning, she looked whiter and more beautiful. So, he asked her, "Mom, why is your face different when you go out in the morning and when you come back in the evening?" She laughed and said, "The more I work, the more I get beautiful." The next morning, she said to her son, "Just stay at home." But the child wanted to know why his mother's face had changed. So, he hid in the tree near the river and was watching his mother. Soon, the witch came to the river. She put all of her things onto the ground and sat beside the river. And she washed her face. Surprisingly, she looked so beautiful. Then, she went back home. The child quietly followed her. When she got back home, she saw that her son was not at home. Very soon, the child came back home. Then, she asked him, "My son, where were you going?" He said, "I was visiting my friends." The next day, the witch said, "My son, shall we visit our farm?" And she took him there. She planted three trees there. She plucked some leaves on a tree and blew them. Then, they changed into a heap of caterpillars. Her son was shocked. Then, the witch (Hpyi Hpai nat) said, "Don't be afraid." And she said, "Come back here!" Then, all the caterpillars disappeared. She plucked leaves from another tree and blew them again. They all changed into fire. She said, "Come back!" Amazingly, the fire was gone. Then, she picked some leaves from the third tree and blew them. The leaves turned into a sea. She said again, "Come back here!" Surprisingly, the sea had disappeared. She told him, "My son, you can't do that because you are so young. Only I can do that. Don't even try, alright?" But he wanted to do like his mother. So, he picked the leaves from those three trees secretly. And they went back home. There were a rich family in that village as well. They had four daughters. The parents adored the youngest daughter more than the first three daughters. So, the three sisters were jealous of their youngest sister. One day, they went fishing. The three elder sisters said to her, "You go catch fish over there." They showed her the place where there weren't many fish. Since they caught lots of fish, they went home without waiting for their sister. She was still trying to get some fish. At that time, the boy (the witch's son) walked past there and saw her. Then, he helped her get big fish. He made friend with her. And then, he followed the girl and stayed at her house. Meanwhile, the witch was looking for her son because she didn't see him at home. Then, she went out to search for her son. She found him at the rich's house. She called him, "My son, let's go home." But he refused to go back home with her. And he took a leaf out of his pocket and blew it hard. Then, it changed into a heap of caterpillars. The witch said, "My son, I can make them disappeared." Then, he took another leaf out and blew it again. This time, it changed into fire. The witch said, "This is what I have taught you. I can stop it." Then, the fire was put out. So, he took the third leaf out and blew it. There was a sea between them. The witch sadly said, "My son, do you want me to stay away from you?" But he didn't respond back. Since then, they were separated. On the other hand, the rich parents asked their youngest daughter in surprise, "How could you get this huge fish!?" She explained them that the boy helped her. During that time, their village was attacked by the other villages. Then, the rich man asked the boy for help. He said to the boy, "Since you are wise, you must know how to do to win over them. Help us, please." Then, the boy created many soldiers with his magical power. Then, they had got many soldiers. They could beat their enemies. In the end, the boy got married to the youngest daughter of the rich. They lived happily together.
