Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story is about gomphrena globosa. I would like to tell you how that flower existed. Once upon a time, there was a family in a village. The mother was dead. So, there were a father and his three daughters in the family. They were rich. The father had to go to the other town to do his business. So, he asked his three daughters, "Tell me what you want. I will take them for you as presents." Ma Kaw (the eldest daughter) said, "I want things that are made of gold. I want gold chains, gold necklaces, and clothes made of gold. Bring me those things." Ma Lu (the second daughter) said, "I want the most expensive jade, dad." Ma Roi (the youngest daughter) said, "I want the white gomphrena globosa that has a good smell. I want a never wilted flower." The father promised to bring those things for his daughters. Then, he went to another town to trade goods. And he traded things there. Later, he went to another place to trade things. There, he saw a beautiful white house on the plain. He and his friends were discussing where to sleep. They said, "We don't have anywhere to go now. We are far from the town. Let's just sleep right there." When they went there, there was no one. They were surprised that no one lived in the house. So, they opened each room to find out if someone lived there. But they didn't see anyone. After a few hours, they were getting hungry. So, they said, "We are hungry. We need to eat something." Then, they saw a table full of meals in the kitchen. They didn't think much and ate those meals. Then, they spent a night there. When they woke up the next morning, they walked outside and looked around the house. It was pleasant. The birds were chirping, it was breezing, and the flowers were blooming. The rich man remembered what his daughter said. He found an unwilted flower that his daughter asked him to bring. So, he tried to pick it up. At that time, an old man with a monkey face and full of hair on his body appeared and grabbed his hand tight. The old man said, "Such an ungrateful man! You have eaten a meal that I served. But now, you are trying to steal my flower! I will make you be ash or smoke! You shouldn't be alive!" The rich man apologized to him, "Don't kill me, please. I am wrong. I sincerely apologize to you. I have eaten a delicious meal you prepared for us, but I tried to steal that flower you grow. I am wrong. You can do me whatever you want. I have already promised my daughter that I would bring that unwilted flower for her. As I have already picked the flower, let me go give this flower to my daughter. And then, I will come back here. You can do me anything you want. You can even kill me if you want. One of my daughters asked me to bring clothes made of gold for her. The other daughter asked me to bring the most expensive jade for her. The youngest daughter told me to bring the gomphrena globosa, so I picked that flower. Let me go give these presents to my daughters. After that, I will come back here. Since I have already picked this flower, I will give you the value for it. How much do you want?" The old man said, "No, I don't want any money. I have a lot. I want a wife who has the same living style like me. So, give me one of your daughters." The rich man agreed, "Okay, I will give you one of my daughters." The old man gave him a ring and said, "This is the magic ring. Wear this ring and wish where you want to go. Then, you will arrive there in a minute." Then, the rich man wore that ring and wished, "I want to go back home and give these presents to my daughters." When he opened his eyes, he was at home. He gave the presents to his daughters. He explained everything to his daughters, "I had met an old man when I picked this unwilted flower. He threatened me because I picked the flower. He told me that he would turn me to ash or smoke. So, I apologized to him and offered that I would give him anything he wanted. But he told me that he didn't want anything and to give him one daughter. Who wants to go there and be his wife?" Then, his daughters refused to go there. They said, "We don't want to get married to that kind of wizard!" At that time, Ma Roi said, "If none of us gets married to him, dad will be ash or smoke. I don't want dad to be like that. So, I will get married to him. Then, the rich man put the ring on his daughter's finger. He told her, "Close your eyes and wish the place where you want to go. Then, you will be there." Ma Roi did the same as her father said. When she arrived at the wizard's house, there was no one. But there were meals on the table. At night, she met that old man and asked him if she could go back home. He told her, "Okay. But you should come back here after three days you go back home. You can't be late." Then, she went back home and met her father. She told him everything she faced there. She told him, "The old man told me that I needed to come back there after three days I spent with you. I couldn't be late, not even a minute. He is rich, but no one lives in that house." Then, her two sisters were jealous of her. They changed the time on the clock. After three days, Ma Roi thought of going back. But it was early when she looked at the clock. In fact, she was late for almost three hours. Meanwhile, the old man thought she would not come back. So, he was sorrowful. He was crying hard and died. When Ma Roi arrived there, she saw that the old man was dead. She was upset that she couldn't do anything for him yet. She was sobbing day and night. Later, she was tired and slept by using her husband's dead body as a pillow. She had a dream while she was sleeping. In her dream, she was a princess and preparing to get married. But a jealous witch killed her. Then, her fiance told her that their souls would be together forever. Then, she was surprised and woke up. When she opened her eyes, she saw a man in a royal costume smiling at her. She saw that she was wearing princess clothes and sat beside that handsome man. Everything she saw in her dream really happened in real life too. In fact, they both were alive again and held a wedding in that house. They lived happily together.
