Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) There was a businessman in a small village. He supported the villagers such as building wells and hand water pumps. One day, he went to another village to trade goods by horse-drawn carriage. On his way, the wheel suddenly fell off. As it was already dark, he was in trouble. He had to sleep right there. While he was sleeping soundly, a drunkard from the village, where he helped a lot, came there. That man stole his most important thing. When he was awake, he saw only the back of the drunkard. But, he knew the thief was from the village where he was currently staying. He knew the thief. The following morning, he continued his way to another village. After his work had been done there, he went back to his village. When he arrived there, he met the thief. But he didn't ask anything. The thief said, "I unintentionally stole a thing from an old man last night. I guess he is angry." The businessman said, "It's me, not an old man. Where did you take that thing?" The thief said, "I'm sorry. I bought some liquor with that." The rich man asked, "Where is that liquor shop?" The thief worried that the rich man would do something to him, so he didn't tell where it was. The rich man said, "It is okay. Just tell me where it is? I will give you prizes. That is very important for me. It's not something you can trade easily with other things." But, the thief denied telling the location of the shop. The rich man asked him, "It's okay then. What are you planning to do?" The thief wanted to own a big farm. The thief said, "I am a drunkard. I want to own a big farm so that I can afford to buy alcohol. Can you give me the money to grow vegetables on the farm? If you give me the money, I will give you back." They made a promise. The thief planned how to deceive the rich man. The rich man asked him, "How much money do you want?" The thief said, "I want enough money for two big farms." The rich man gave the money to him, but he didn't give the most valuable thing back to the rich man. After one year, the rich man was doing farms and gave jobs to many villagers. The thief's wife was one of the workers under the rich man. One day, she was accidentally dead. The thief went to the rich man and asked for his wife's dead body. The rich man remembered that the thief didn't give his precious thing back. So, he thought to act the same as the thief. He said, "I can't give you the dead body. She passed away while working for me. If I give the dead body to a drunkard like you, my reputation will fall." He said it should be the right way. The thief kept saying, "No! Please, give my wife's dead body. I want to bury her by myself." The rich man said, "No, I can't give you. She died in my compound. A rich man like me can hold your wife's funeral well. If I give you this dead body, it hurts my pride. Whatever you say, I won't change my mind. You better go back home and take care of your children." Don't worry about your wife's funeral." Then, the drunkard was crying and in deep sorrow. At last, he told the location of the shop where he traded the important thing of the rich man. The people from the shop did not know how to use that valuable thing. So, it was accidentally broken. The rich man got his thing back. The drunkard regretted his action towards the rich man. The rich man forgave the drunkard and even gave the money to his family. And he held the best funeral for the drunkard's wife. He continued to support the villagers with love. He was recognized as a righteous and generous man. Transcription (Lu Awng) Moi shawng de da ndai kahtawng kaji langai mi kaw e ndai hpaga la langai mi lai wa ai da.
