Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Thank you very much. The story I'm going to tell is about two traders. Once upon a time, there were two best friends in a village. One day, they decided to trade goods and went to another village. They traded goods for many years. One man succeeded in trading goods and got lots of money. But the other one failed in doing his business. Then, the successful man said to his friend, "Since we came here together, let's go back to our village together." His friends said, "I don't have much money because my business is not going well. I don't have anything to give to my wife and children when I arrive home. So, I will find some money here. I will not go back yet." But he said, "Don't worry, my friend. Since my business is doing well, I will pay for the travel cost. When you arrive home, I will share some of my money with you. We will go back together since we came here together. Don't worry about money. Let's just go back." Then, they went back to their village on foot. At that time, there were no planes, cars, motorbikes or bicycles. They had to walk for four or five days without stopping to get to their village. One night, they had to stop under a tall banyan tree because it was getting dark. They cooked dinner there and slept under it. It was a full moon night, and the moon was really beautiful. It was a pleasant night. After eating their dinner, they prepared their beds to sleep. The successful man fell asleep fast. While he was sleeping soundly, the other man couldn't sleep with the thought of, "Ummm, my friend is successful and has got a lot of money. But I didn't succeed in doing my business. I have nothing! What can I give to my family?" He was thinking so hard, but he didn't know how to do. Then, he got an idea. He thought, "Only the amount of money he would share with me is not enough for my family and me. I will kill my friend and take all of his property. Then, I can give a lot of money to my family. That's good!" Then, he killed his friend. He took all of his friend's money and went back to his village. With that money, he lived happily with his family. Then, the wife of his friend whom he killed asked him, "Why did you come back alone? What about my husband? Why didn't he come back?" He told me that he would come back together with you." He said, "Your husband failed in doing his business. So, he left to stay there. I asked him to go back together, but he refused to go back. He told me that he wanted to earn much more money. So, I came back alone." He lied to her. Then, she just went back to her house. The dishonest man became rich and lived happily with his family in the village. He frittered the money away easily. Days after days, the money he stole from his friends was not left much. He said to his wife, "Give me some money!" His wife said, "We don't have any money left." But he angrily said, "Give me some money you keep secretly!" Then, she had to give money to him. Later, he became worse. He beat his wife up if she said she didn't have any money when he asked for it. Sometimes, his wife asked him, "My dear husband, how did you succeed and get lots of money when your friend became such a loser." He said, "Don't tell anyone. Actually, I didn't succeed in doing my business. I lost all of my goods. My friend succeeded in doing business. He asked me to go back to the village together. But I said I didn't want to. He told me that he would share money with me and cost all money on the way. On our way back to the village, I decided to kill him and take all his property. You can't tell anyone, okay?" His wife was greedy too, so she didn't tell anyone. But, they didn't have any money left later. Her husband always beat her if she didn't give money. One day, while her husband was beating her up, she was angry and shouted, "My husband killed his friend! And he took all of his friend's money." The neighbours heard her and quickly went to her house. They arrested the man and sent him to the chiefs. When the village leaders asked him if that was true, he said, "Yes, that's true. I killed him and took his money." He was found guilty. So, they killed him too as a punishment. His family got into trouble too. His wife was seriously ill because of the wound. His family was broken into pieces. In this story, we get a moral lesson. We should love each other, but we don't. We shouldn't take the other's properties as we want. We have our Mighty God who always wants justice for us. So, we shouldn't have bad or illegal behaviour towards the other. If we do that kind of behaviour, not only the one who commits it but also his family will be in failure. This is a short story about two men who did business together.
