Description: | Translation (Htoi San) I am telling a story about three sisters. A long time ago, a widow and her daughters lived in a hamlet. The widow's family worked in a paddy field for their living, which was a bit far from their village. The mother left the sisters at home one day. The mother informed her children, "My children, I am going to the farm alone today." "There is an evil spirit tiger in this place. Please don't open the door unless I come back. Don't open this door to anyone else and lock it all the time." After telling all this, their mother left home for her farm. When their mother reached the farm and worked there, the tiger followed her and attacked and ate her. As the tiger was an evil spirit, it knew three children were still at home. So it went to their house. The tiger got to the children's house and said, "My children, Mom is coming back." Ma Kaw thought, "My mom told us not to open the door so that I won't open it." "My children. Mother is home," the tiger said again. Then the children asked, "If you are my mom, show us your eyes." The tiger pretended to be their mother and peeped into the hole with its eyes. The eldest sister responded, "These are not my mom's eyes. Your eyes are really red. Our mother's eyes are not red. So you are not my mother." The tiger replied, "Yeah, that's right. I rubbed my eyes while I was plucking chilis on the farm. So my eyes are burning." Ma Kaw was an intelligent girl and told the tiger, "Alright then, show me your hands." The tiger showed its hands were very hairy and its nails were so long. Thus, Ma Kaw knew, "These are not my mother's hands." The tiger took an egg from the ground and applied it to its hands to make them smooth. After that, it showed them again, and Ma Lu rubbed its hands and found they had no hair, so she thought it was her mother. So Ma Lu said, "Let's open the door." "Oh no. It cannot be true. That is not our mother. Whatever it is, she is not our mother. It could be an evil spirit tiger. My younger sisters, we cannot open the door. How can we run from here?" said the eldest sister. The three sisters discussed how to run. Long ago, we could communicate with everything. So the sisters placed a needle on a paddy mortar. "Whenever you hear 'Children,' please answer for us," told the eldest sister, and they ran away from the back door. The tiger called and called until it was tired. So it opened the door and found no children in the house. Then it chased after the sisters, and it reached them at last. The sisters did not know what to do when the tiger reached them. Ma Kaw asked Ma Lu to carry an oil bucket while running. The three sisters did not know what to do, and they climbed up a tree. They all climbed up the tree and reached it. The tiger also chased them. The eldest sister knew the tiger could climb the tree, so she asked Ma Lu to pour the oil she asked her to carry from the tree. Pouring down the oil from the tree made it slippery. Therefore the tiger could not climb up the tree. So it told the children with a pitiful face, "Children, Mother also wants to follow you. Let me follow you. Please help me. I will go after you all." As the tiger kept saying this, the young sister Ma Roi was so kind and told the tiger, "Mother, there is my axe at home. Go and take it and make a step on the tree. Then climb up." The tiger went back and took the axe. After that, it cut the tree to make steps. When it was about to finish and climb up to the sisters, they did not know what to do and prayed, "Please help us." Due to their prayer, a basket was dropped from heaven. The three sisters went and rode into it, then went up. The tiger sat under the tree and said, "Please help me too." Then another basket was dropped for it. But the rope was a decayed one and broke off. So the tiger died as the basket dropped due to the decayed rope. The three sisters arrived in the sky. Ma Kaw became the Sun, and Ma Lu became the Moon. The youngest sister Ma Roi became the star. Due to Ma Kaw, Ma Lu and Ma Roi could shine brightly in the sky. Transcription (La Ring) Moi ndai kanau kana lam masum bai hkai dan na yaw Sarama.
