Description: | Translation (Htoi San) A long time ago, there were a disabled widow and her child in a village. The child looked after his mother. He sold snails for a living. He bought some rice and vegetables with the money he got after selling snails. He was looking after his disabled mom in that way. It was already fourteen or fifteen years that he sold snails for a living. The boy had grown up too. There was a rich man in their village too. He had got a beautiful daughter. The girl saw the boy selling the snails at the market every morning. Then, she bought all snails he was selling. She bought all the snails and some vegetables every morning. One day, she confessed her feelings to him. He told the girl, "Don't love me. I am a poor boy. And I have a disabled mother. I sell only snails and make a living. You will regret it later. You and I live in two different worlds. We are not matched." However, the girl didn't stop loving him. She always came to the market to meet him. She always bought snails and went back home. In the end, she told her mother, "Mom, I want to get married." Her mother asked her, "Are you seeing someone?" She said, "Yes, I have one in my heart." One morning, she went to the market with her mother. She told the boy the day before, "Don't sell snails in the market tomorrow. Just come to the market." But the boy was used to selling the snails. Therefore, he was selling the snails as usual. When the girl came to the market with her mother, the boy was selling snails. She told her mother, "Mom, he is the one I want to marry." The mother said, "My sweetheart, why do you love that poor guy? Why do you want to marry the guy who sells snails?" She said firmly, "I want to marry him, mom." When she told her father about the boy, her father got really angry. He scolded her, "I already talk to other rich families about the marriage proposal for you. How come you fall in love with such a poor guy!?" She said, "I just want to marry him." The girl didn't change her feeling towards him. So, she eloped with the boy. Her parents were upset, "How could she fall in love with a poor guy?" Since the girl had some gold, she sold it and decorated the house. And she lived there with her husband. One day, the boy told her, "Let's go catch the snails." Luckily, she found a valuable jade there. There were many long snails in that place. She asked him, "Do you always come here to catch the snails?" He said, "Yes." She told him, "Don't you see these jades?" He said, "I don't know this is valuable." She said to him, "This is your luck. Let's take this home. This is precious." At home, she told him, "Go sell this jade at the market." He said, "I don't know how to sell it." She told him where to sell. However, no one could buy his jade. The merchants told him, "This jade is priceless, so we can't afford to buy it." He asked them, "Then, who can buy it?" They told him, "There is the richest man in this village. They can afford to buy your jade." The richest man was his father-in-law. But he didn't know that the richest man was his father-in-law. He had met them only in the market. He didn't know it was his parents-in-law's house too. When he arrived there, his mother-in-law saw him. She told her husband, "This is our son-in-law." Then, the father-in-law said, "There is no way that this poor guy has the priceless jade if he doesn't steal it." He called the village head and arrested him. The boy denied, "I didn't steal it. My wife found this stone. I didn't steal it." The village head told him, "Call your wife. Let's ask her." Then, his mother-in-law went to his house and called his wife. When his wife arrived there, she said that it was true. Then, her father was shocked. He said, "How did you get this jade?" She said, "It is our fate. There is this priceless jade where he always catches the snails. GOD bless us because we are a match made in heaven." He thought, "I made my lucky son-in-law arrested. I was wrong." Then, he apologized to his son-in-law. He arranged the wedding for them too. He also gave half of his properties as a wedding gift. He built a new house for them as big as his house. He gave his blessings to his daughter and son-in-law. Transcription (La Ring) Moi shawng de lagaw lata hten rai nna grai yak hkak ai gaida jan hkan nu nga ma ai.
