Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was an old man who had three sons; Ma Gam, Ma Naw and Ma La. Ma Gam and Ma Naw were brave. They were very good at shooting arrows and using spears. They were very strong and good at everything. But Ma La was not like that. He thought everything carefully first before he decided it. He was patient too. One day, their father said to them, "Each of you, go and find a woman whom you like and who has the same mindset as you." So, they went out to find brides. On their way, they saw there was a group of ants in the water. They were on a fallen tree in the water. At that time, Ma Gam and Ma Naw tried to push the tree into the deep water to kill the ants. The youngest brother stopped them and said, "Don't do like that. Let them stay there. Don't kill them." So, they didn't kill the ants and kept going to find brides. Then, they stopped for lunch somewhere on the way. While they were having lunch, they saw a family of ducks swimming happily in the water. Ma Gam was about to shoot them. He said, "If we kill those ducks and grilled them, we will be so full." Ma La, the youngest brother, said, "Don't kill them, my brother. Although we don't eat them, we have enough food for us." They didn't kill them and continued their journey. While they kept going, they saw a big beehive on a tree. There was much honey too. Ma Gam and Ma Naw said, "If we eat that honey, we will be so full." Then, they built a fire to drive the bees away and get a beehive. Ma La said, "Don't burn them. If the fire catches the tree, things will get worse. We have enough food although we don't eat that honey." The two elder brothers were angry at Ma La because he kept stopping them not to do this or that the whole day. Then, they continued their journey. Somewhere in the forest, they saw a house. An old man and a young lady lived there. The old man asked them, "Where are you going, you three?" They said, "We are searching for a woman who is meant to be with us." The old man said, "Then, sleep here for a night." The three brothers fell in love with the beautiful as soon as they saw her. So, the old man didn't know how to do. He said to Ma Gam first, "Tomorrow, go get 1000 pearls. You must bring 1000 pearls before it gets dark. If you can't, you will be a post." Ma Gam said, "That's so easy for me. I can do it." The next day, he went to find 1000 pearls. But he got only 10. So, he turned into a post right there. The old man asked Ma Naw to do the same thing. Ma Naw got only 20 pearls the whole day. So, he turned into a post too. Then, the old man asked Ma La to do the same too. Ma La was thinking so hard; how to do with this problem. The beautiful lady said to him, "Don't worry too much. Just think in a simple way. Try your best to be success in collecting pearls." On his way, he met ants. One of the ants climbed onto him and said in his ears, "Where are you going?" He said, "I'm searching pearls." It said, "Then, I will help you. I am the king of ants. You have saved our lives before. You saved us when your brothers were trying push us into the water. We'd like to show our gratitude for what you've done." The ants helped him searching pearls. He got 1000 pearls even before it got dark. He went back and showed the pearls to the old man. The old man was surprised. He said to Ma La, "There is a ring of the girl. She lost it in the water. You have to take it back tomorrow. If you can't, you will be a post." The next morning, he went to the river to get the ring back. At that time, a mother duck came to him. It asked him, "Where are you going?" He said, "A girl's ring dropped in this river. So, I am coming here to find it." It said, "Then, we will help you. You saved us from your brothers. So, we'd like to express our gratitude to you." A duck family helped him finding the ring. Before it got dark, he found the ring. He gave it to the old man. The old man was so surprised. He thought, "This young man is really brave." And he said to Ma La, "I will let you do only one more thing tomorrow." He made the beautiful girl into three clones. And he told Ma La, "If you can choose the right girl, take her. If you can't choose her correctly, you will be a post." Ma La was thinking so hard how to choose the right one. He was about to choose one girl. At that moment, a bee flew near him and said, "I'd like to show my gratitude to you since you've saved our lives. I will show which girl is the right one. I'm the king of bees. You saved us when your brothers were about to burn us. So, I'd like to show my gratitude." Then, it started finding the correct girl among three. It sat on the middle one. It said, "This is the correct one." Then, Ma La took the hand of that girl. The old man was surprised and said to Ma La, "You can do all the things I've asked you to do. So, you are the right person for her. You can take her as your wife." In the end, Ma La and the beautiful girl lived happily ever after.
