Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there were a grandmother and her grandchild in a village. They searched for yam to eat. They also worked in a field. One day, the boy went fishing. At that time, he got a bead that was as shiny as the sun. He took it home and covered it with a white pumpkin. Suddenly, there was a fire in their village. So, he quickly cut the pumpkin and put the bead inside it. One day, a group of boys told the orphan boy, "Let's go to the city and work there." The orphan boy said, "I don't have anything to do a business. I own only this white pumpkin." Then, the boys told him, "Then bring that pumpkin." The orphan boy told them, "Don't ask for the ferry fees, please." They told him, "Okay, we won't." Then, the orphan went there with them. When they were there, the boys sold everything they had brought. They asked the orphan boy, "Don't you go back to the village with us?" The boy answered, "No. Tell my grandmother that I couldn't sell my white pumpkin yet." Then, the group of boys went back to the village. And the orphan boy lived at a widow's house. At night, he opened his white pumpkin to check. At that moment, people shouted, "Fire! Fire!" The boy was shocked and quickly hid his pumpkin near the well. People shouted again, "The fire has died out!" Later, the boy told the old widow, "Grandma, no one buys my white pumpkin. What should I do?" At night, he opened it again. As soon as he opened it, people shouted, "Fire! Fire!" He did that every night. One day, the chief said, "There is light like a fire coming out of the widow's house. Let's check it." The servants replied to him, "There is only a poor orphan boy in that house." Then, the chief said, "Bring him to me." When the boy arrived there, the chief asked him, "What do you do?" He answered, "I am selling the white pumpkin." The chief told him, "Bring that pumpkin. I will give you anything you want." The boy kept silent but scratched his head. The chief told him again, "Bring your pumpkin." Then, the boy went back home and opened the pumpkin at midnight. People were shouting, "There is a fire! Fire!" The chief at the palace thought, "All citizens are anxious and in chaos. What did the orphan boy do?" The chief called him to check what had actually happened. Then, the boy opened it in front of the chief. As soon as he opened it, there was a fire burning brightly. The chief wanted it so much, so he offered the boy, "Tell me how much you want. I will give you half of my country. And you can choose a woman whom you want to marry too." But the boy kept scratching his head without saying a word. The chief told him again, "Okay then. I will give you almost all parts of my country." In the end, the boy accepted the chief's offer. The chief told him to choose the girl too. The boy chose the youngest girl among six siblings. The chief said, "You work as my counsellor and serve me. I will celebrate your wedding soon." While he was staying there, he told the chief, "My lord, I would like to take my grandmother to live with me here." The chief agreed with what he said. The chief told him, "Escort your grandmother here by a white horse and a white elephant." In the end, he got married and lived happily together with his grandmother and wife. This is the end of the story. Transcription (La Ring) Moi shawng e jahkrai kasha hte kawoi dwi shan lahkawng nga ai da. Shan hkawng gaw nai htu sha ai.
