Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) In the past, there was a slavery era in Kachin society. At that time, chieftains and the rich oppressed the poor. It was called 'Du Magam Prat', also known as 'Gumchying Gumsa Prat'. Today, people say that "Gumchying Gumsa Prat" is bad. In fact, the meaning of 'Gumchying Gumsa' is that rule of law is upheld and influenced in society. A long time ago, there were a lady and a man. They loved each other and decided to marry. All the relatives from both families agreed and gave their permission. The groom also offered loads of bride price to the bride's family. They married in the way of traditional animism. The bride had a brother. She was the elder sister. She had a younger brother. When she got married, she and her husband did farming for their living. In the highland area, there were many streams, rivers and mountains. Their farm was on the other side of the stream, so they had to go across it to get to their farm. One day, the stream overflowed the path. When the couple and the wife's younger brother walked across the stream, her husband and her younger brother had floated away in the water. It seems like the wife was a firm person. She didn't save her husband when her husband had floated away. Instead, she saved her younger brother. The husband swam hard to get to the shore. When they got back to the village, the husband went to the chiefs and requested that he wanted to divorce his wife. So, the chiefs called the wife to solve that problem. She brought her younger brother and went there. The chiefs asked her, Your husband said that you don't love him and you love your brother more. When he and your brother had floated, you didn't save him. Instead, you saved your younger brother. So, your husband requested that he wanted to break up with you. Why did you save your younger brother instead of saving your husband?" She answered, "My estimable chiefs, I saved my younger brother because he is the only sibling of mine. If he died, I could never have someone like him. My parents already passed away, so I can't have another brother. The reason why I didn't save my husband is that I can have another husband although he died. If he wants to break up with me, let him do. I can't get another brother, but I can get another husband. You can make any decision." Then, the chiefs asked the husband again. At that time, he said, "I was wrong. My wife is a good woman. I requested you to help me in divorcing such a good woman like her. I made a big mistake. I will love and protect my wife and her younger brother till the end of my life." In the end, they lived happily together.
