Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) In Kachin tradition, there is a culture called 'bye htang' after the wedding. That is a culture that we must do after getting married. This is the culture that we do to show respect for the bride's family and relatives. 'Bye htang' is also known as 'kabang tauku hta ai' in Jinghpaw language. 'Bye htang' is essential for Kachin people. That is an important Kachin custom. 'Bye htang' is a custom that we do after the wedding. We inform the wife's family that we are already married and offer them a traditional gift basket with sticky rice, chicken, eggs, etc. The bride's parents will be 'kanyi' (mother-in-law) and 'katsa' (father-in-law) for the groom. We do 'bye-htang' to ask for blessings from the wife's parents too. Getting blessings from parents is really important for us in Kachin tradition. When the newlywed comes to ask for the blessing, the bride's parents also give something valuable back to them. They never let the son-in-law and the daughter go back without giving the blessing. The parents give blessings to the newlyweds. They give the sling that is used for carrying the baby to the newlyweds. They said, "May your life fill with your children." These are the things that we do after the wedding. All these activities are done in 'bye-htang'.
