Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I am going to tell is about a man and a big snake. In our Kachin tradition, we do farming for 12 years. I am going to tell about that. One day, a boy went to the field to clean and pluck the bushes with his parents. Then he saw a little snake passing in front of him. He teased the snake and tried to cut by knife since he was a child. Unintentionally, the snake's tail was cut. But it didn't get hurt seriously because the cut was not on the important parts. So the snake was alive. Next year, he and his parents went to the field to cut the bushes and dry grass again. Then, he told his mother, "Mom, I accidentally cut the snake's tail last year when I came to clear the field." His mom said, "My son, snake is not a teasing toy. When you see a snake next time, you must remember what I said. If a snake is not big and you think you can kill, then just kill it until it dies. If you can't, let them go." He kept in mind what his mom said. Then, when he went to the field next time, he never killed a snake even though he saw it. After a few years, his parents were seriously ill. He didn't know how to cure them. He couldn't do anything for them. At last, his parents were dead. He was upset. Then, he didn't go to the field to clear and cut the dry grass next year. He just worked to earn some money. After he had worked for one year, he went to the field again. While he was clearing the grass in the field, he saw that there was a big fallen tree. Then he tried to move that fallen tree. But he suddenly felt dizzy. He fell asleep. While he was sleeping, he had a dream. In his dream, a snotty young boy told him, "Do you remember that you cut me? Next year, we are going to meet again. Don't be scared when we meet again. You must have a sharp knife if you want to win. And you must be good at hide and seek." It will be 12 years in next year since they cleared and cut the grass from the field from the first year. And he was 24 years old. He became a young man. Finally, when they two met, a big snake with a short tail suddenly came out from the fallen tree. When a snake tried to bit him, he quickly went inside the fallen tree. And he cut the snake's neck by his sword. The snake's head flew up and fell right on him. The snake's fangs were buried in his neck. They both died at last. Since then, humans and snakes became enemy. So, when you kill a snake, you must kill it until it dies. If a snake is big and seem like you can't kill, then just let it go.
