Description: | Translation (Seng Pan) The story I am going to tell you now is about a merchant and a wolf. Once upon a time, there was a wolf. The wolf lived in a forest near a village. At night, it always went to the village and ate the villager's pigs, cows and buffalos. Even during the day, it killed and ate the animals when the villagers went to the field. As it always came and had the villagers' animals, they were brought to an end. Therefore, the villagers were so angry at the wolf. They decided to gather and kill it. So, they went together to the forest where the wolf lived. When they arrived there, they surrounded the wolf by holding bows, air guns and slingshots. Fortunately, the wolf noticed that the villagers were surrounding it. So, it tried to escape from that forest. As it ran away, the villagers also chased after it. When the wolf reached a place, it saw a merchant carrying a big basket with a lot of cottons. Then the wolf called him and said, "Please Help me! The people are chasing me." The merchant replied, "Why are they following you? What did you do them? Since I don't know what you did to them, you should accept your sin." "I didn't commit any sins to them. They want to eat my meat. That's why they are chasing me," the wolf replied. "Oh! The villagers should not do this kind of unfair thing. Don't worry. I will save you," the merchant replied. And he let the wolf hide in his basket. He covered it with cotton and brought it to his home. When the merchant arrived at home, he said, "Wolf, you are safe now. You can go back to your place." By saying it, he opened the basket. Then, the wolf said, "The whole day, I haven't had anything yet since I was escaping. I am starving. Please feed me meat!" The wolf asked for meat. Then, the merchant gave a small piece of meat which he left to have later. But he let it eat all. "This small piece of meat cannot let me feel full. My stomach is quite big. At my place, I ate the whole cow and buffalo alone. That's why I cannot be satisfied with your meat," the wolf replied. "When the people chased you, you told me that you didn't make any mistakes. They followed after you as you ate their animals, didn't they?" the merchant questioned. At that time, the wolf committed, "Yes, I ate. Since I ate many animals, the villagers were so angry and wanted to kill me. Therefore, they chased me," the wolf answered. Then, the merchant said, "It's my big mistake that I saved you." "You regret it! I will eat you now. It's your turn to be eaten," the wolf replied and growled at him. The merchant said, "Wait a moment! Let a wise person decide whether you should eat me or not." Since the wold was eager to eat the merchant, it agreed to meet the wise person. And the merchant brought a wise man. They asked him to decide for them. The wise man asked, "How did this problem start? The wolf told him the whole story. The merchant also told him that he saved the wolf as it begged, but it planned to eat then. Each declared all the things which happened. The wise man asked, "Wolf, how did you prey on the villagers' animals when you were at your place?" "Ok! If you don't trust that I ate many animals, I will bring you to my place," the wolf replied and led two men to his forest. On their way, the wise man called the villagers and surrounded the wolf together. The wolf was caught at last. And it was killed since it didn't keep the promise.
