Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there were two boys called Brang Mai and Brang Zet. Brang Zet was naughty and selfish. Brang Mai was clever and patient as his name. (In Kachin, 'Mai' means good and clever.) One day, they went hunting the birds. After hunting the whole day, Brang Mai got one bird, but Brang Zet couldn't get any bird. They took a rest under a tree since they were exhausted hunting the bird. Then, Brang Mai fell asleep. While he was sleeping, Brang Zet hid the bird which Brang Mai got. After a few hours, Brang Mai woke up and searched for his bird. But he couldn't find it. So, he asked Brang Zet, "Where is my bird?" Brang Zet lied to him and said, "I don't know." And Brang Zet walked away. Then, he saw a big pit and called Brang Mai, "Come here, my friend. I will show you something." When Brang Mai came, he pushed him into the pit. Brang Zet left him in the pit and went back home alone. After a few hours, a nat spirit came there and asked Brang Mai, "Why are you there? What are you doing?" Brang Mai replied, "My friend pushed me." The nat spirit said, "I will help you. Which ladder do you want to use to climb up: a gold ladder or a bamboo one?" Brang Mai said, "I will use only a bamboo ladder as I am just poor." The nat spirit gave him a good ladder. And it told him, "Take this box when you go home." Brang Mai took the box and went back home. He saw there were lots of gold inside it when he opened it at home. Brang Mai and his mother were happy and became rich. Then, Brang Zet asked him, "How could you get rich?" Brang Mai said, "It's all because you pushed me into the pit. I got rich because of that pit." Then, Brang Zet went there alone and jumped into that pit. Later, the nat spirit asked him, "Why are you in this pit?" Brang Zet said, "I jumped into this pit by myself." The nat spirit asked him, "Don't you want to climb up?" Brang Zet said, "Of course! I want to." The nat asked him, "Which ladder do you want to use to climb up: the bamboo ladder or the gold ladder?" He happily said, "The gold ladder." But the nat gave him only the bamboo ladder. When he was up the pit, the nat gave him a box and said, "Take this. Open it when you arrive home." But Brang Zet really wanted to open the box on his way to the house. He was greedy and curious, so he opened it. Then, a giant snake came out of the box and swallowed him. He was dead. So, we should not be jealous of others. Transcription (La Ring) Brang Mai hte Brang Zet a lam um moi shawng de Brang Mai yen Brang Zet nga ai da.
