Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I'm going to tell you is about a poor boy. Once upon a time, there were a widow and her son in a village. In the past, children used blackboards to write the words. But this fatherless child couldn't afford to buy a blackboard and some chalks. So, he couldn't attend school. One day, there was a wedding in their village. He really wanted to go there. But he didn't have any nice clothes. He didn't have any oil to apply to his hair. So, he couldn't go there. One day, he decided to work to earn some money. He loved his mother so much. He wanted to take care of his mother, so he decided to work. Before he went to work, he asked for his mother's blessings. "Mom, I want to be a wealthy person one day. I want to be a person who can help other people. Bless me, mom," said the boy. His mother smiled and blessed him, "You will be, my son. You will be a person who can help other people." He really worked hard. When someone asked him to carry the water, he did it. Whatever the other people asked him, he did it for them. He saved all of the money that he earned. One day, he went to the forest to collect some wood. People in the past used to bury the gold pot under the tree. Luckily, he found a gold pot under the tree. He took it home and showed his mother. His mother touched it and said, "My son, burn the side of this pot." Then, he saw that the pot was actually gold. His mother told him, "Go and sell it." Then, they had got some money. At first, anyone didn't like him because of his appearance. But after having some money, some girls liked him and wanted to talk to him. There was a girl who lived with her widower father. She liked the boy. The boy liked her too. So, they got married. He didn't know that his wife was lazy and didn't want to work anything. When he went somewhere to work, he had to leave his blind, old mother with his wife. But she didn't want to take care of her mother-in-law. She scolded her mother-in-law, "I don't even take care of my father! But here, I have to look after you! I have to shower you, cook for you, take care of you and everything!" At night, she tried to persuade her husband, "My darling, your mother is blind. I have to do a lot for her. I think it will be uneasy for me to take care of her. I think she doesn't want to live with us too. And we can't get lots of money if we are staying here. The cost is too much for us since you are the only one who has work. When we have some children, we have to look after them too. So, we should send your mother away. Put your mother in a basket and throw her into the river. She will be drifted through the river. Some kind people will see her and save her. We cannot know if she will be saved by a rich man. Then it will be good for her too." The boy was upset to hear that. He was crying secretly at night. The thought suffocated him. But he decided to listen to his wife. So, he weaved a bamboo basket and put his mother into it. And he put her into the river. He told his mother, "Don't worry, mom. Kind people will find you and save you. Don't worry." And he gave a wrap of cooked rice to his mother. The old mother was sobbing. But he sent her away. She was so scared and prayed to nat spirits, "Save me. Please, protect me from any danger." She was floating through the river. He felt guilty about the thought of abandoning his own mother. He couldn't sleep at all. He was killed with the thought, "My mom is alone in the middle of the water. She is helpless." The next early morning, he went to the place where he abandoned his mother. He was crying there. "Mum! I can't find you anywhere. I have become this kind of person. You raise me up. It's all because of you. But I am stupid and ungrateful to you. Come back to me. I will take good care of you, mum. I promise," he talked to himself. He was sobbing and said, "I will divorce my stupid wife too." On the other hand, the old mother was floating through the river. At one place, her basket was stuck with a log. Actually, nat spirits saw her and wanted to eat her rice. So, they stopped her there. And they took her rice and gave their gold pots to her back. And then, they sent her back to the upriver area where she was first floated. They told her, "You son regrets abandoning you. He is crying so hard beside the river. Go back to him and live happily forever." Meanwhile, her son was crying beside the river, "My mom might be dead. I will be an orphan now." At that time, he saw his mother in the river again. He was happy and said, "My mom is back. I can live with my mom again." He quickly went into the water and saved his mother. His mother showed things in the basket which nat spirits gave her and told him, "My son, I don't know what they are. Take a look." He saw that they were gold. He regretted abandoning his mother and apologized to her, "You have raised me up even when you didn't have much money. But I wasn't grateful and did such a stupid thing. I sincerely apologize to you, mom." He divorced his mean wife and drove her away. And then, he and his mother lived happily forever. Everyone should show his gratitude and love to his mother no matter how hard the situation is. We shouldn't abandon our own mothers and should love them.
