Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This story is about a widow and her children who were farmers. Once upon a time, there was a widow who was a farmer and a mother of three children in a village. On her fields, there was lots of grass. She tried to pluck if all off, but the grass kept growing. She was exhausted and depressed. So, she wrote, "Whoever help me cleaning this field, I will give one of my daughters he admires," and went back home. Surprisingly, the field was cleaned when she went there the next day. She wondered who cleaned her field. She thought, "I need to give one of my daughters to the one who has helped me. He can take the one he likes." Actually, a huge snake was cleaning the widow's field. At night, the snake changed into a man and went to the widow. And he said, "Hello! If you keeps your promise, give me any daughters of yours." The widow replied, "Take anyone you like." She coaxed her eldest daughter to get married to the man, but her daughter refused to do so. So, the mother told her second daughter, "Then, you will need to get married to him." But her second daughter refused to get married too. The youngest daughter said, "Mom, he could pluck all those grass and help you a lot. So, I will marry him." Then, they got married. The man took her to the cave where he lived. Before they entered the cave, he told her, "Close your eyes." He took her into the cave. Inside the cave, there were lots of golds and jewelleries. She was pleased with the thought, "He took me to this pleasant place. How nice he is!" They were happy there, and had a baby soon. After having a baby, they thought to visit the girl's village. The girl went back to her mother's house first. She brought her mother lots of golds. Her two sisters were jealous of her. So, they killed her secretly. And the second sister pretended as her youngest sister, whom she killed, and went back to her youngest sister's husband. The man thought something was wrong and said, "You are not my wife!" The second sister lied, "Of course! I'm your wife. It's because I am just a bit tired since I worked too hard when I lived with my mom." The man was suspicious and doubted, "I think you aren't my wife." But she kept saying that she was his wife. The real wife was dead. All of her bones became chickens. The chickens went to the cave, where the second sister and the man lived, and ate the leftovers. The second sister felt strange, and killed those chickens and ate them. The chicken bones that they threw away became mice. No matter how many times they killed the youngest sister, she was born again as other lives. Actually, the second sister pickled her youngest sister's flesh. She pickled the flesh first. And she fed her husband those pickles. Then, he saw human's bones in the pickle. He was shocked and surprised. His suspiciousness had grown much. So, he was always aware of his current wife. At night, the mouse came into the bed where the man slept and bit him. Later, he knew that his current wife was his beloved wife's sister. He wanted to save his beloved wife, but he didn't know how to do. Then, he secretly caught the mouse and saved it. He had got one daughter with his first wife and another daughter with his current wife. Later, the second wife knew that her husband had saved the mouse. So, she killed it again. There grew a tree where the mouse was buried. Since the second wife favored her daughter, the daughter of the first wife was desperate and felt like an abondaned child. So, the little girl always went to the tree and sat under it silently. She didn't know it was her mother's tree. Everytime she sat under it, the leaves were falling over her. Surprisingly, all the leaves had changed into money. But when the second wife's daughter came there, all those money became the leaves again. The tree felt sad since her past-life daughter was upset and sat under it alone. So, it tried to make her feel happy. Since then, the man learnt that it should be his first wife. So, he told his current wife, "You are so mean and jealous!" And he killed her. And then, he plucked the tree and planted it in front of his house. They lived happily forever. This is the end of the story. Transcription (La Ring) Yi galaw sha ai gaida yan nu ni a lam. Moi shawng de e gaida jan gaw yi sha galaw sha ai kasha gaw masum lu ai.
