Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I am going to tell is about a mother who turned into a cicada because of sadness. Once upon a time, there was a mother who had three children. They did farming for their living. They grew rice grain and other vegetables in their farm. She let her children take care of the farm from the danger of the birds. Later, when it was time to harvest grain, she asked her children, "Is it time to harvest yet?" Her children replied, "Not yet, Mom. We still need to make bamboo clappers to scare hogs." She said, "My children, you all are very good. Take good care of our rice grain." She kept telling to her children. One night, she asked her second son, "Is it time to harvest now?" Her son said, "Not yet, Mom." Whenever she asked, her children always said that it was not time to harvest yet. Then, the mother didn't have anything to eat at home. She was depressed and went to the farm. When she reached there, she saw that there was nothing on the farm. Then, she asked her eldest son, "Where is all of our rice? Where did you put all those rice?" He said, "Mom, you go and look near the outskirts of the farm." She was so happy and went to the place where her son pointed. But she saw that there were only faeces. She was upset. Then, she asked her second son again, "Where is our rice?" The second son said, "Go to the front area of the farm." But she saw only faeces there. Then, she asked the youngest son, he said, "We've eaten all, Mom. We live here and eat here." When she heard that, she was so sad. She didn't know about that and she brought all sizes of baskets. Actually, her sons already ate those rice. There was nothing left to grow. She was extremely upset. She cut all of the baskets she brought. And she made wings. She tried to fly with those wings on the farm. When she flew, her youngest son said, "Mom, you fly very beautifully. Fly high, fly high." The mother said, "If you say like that, I will fly beautifully and higher." Then, she flew around the farm and high in the sky. So, when we cut the cicada's belly, there is nothing inside it. It's because she didn't get to eat anything when she was a human. And some of her children became a monkey in the forest. Some turned into a porcupine. And she flew up in the sky and stayed on the tree. The reason why there is nothing inside a cicada's belly is that she was hungry and upset.
