Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The title of the story is 'a poor couple'. Once upon a time, there were an old man and a woman who didn't have any children. They were poor. They were penniless. One day, the old man went to the lake and went fishing since they didn't have anything to eat. He was fishing there. But he couldn't catch a fish! He didn't get any fish. He felt depressed. He was depressed because he couldn't catch any fish. When it was getting dark, he decided to catch one last time and threw the hook into the water. Luckily, a beautiful fish was caught. It was so beautiful that he didn't even want to cook it. At that time, the fish spoke to him, "Grandpa, spare me, please. I'm a fish living in this lake. If you let me go, I'll give you everything you want. So, please spare me." The old man thought, "Right. She is begging that much, so I should release her." Then, he released her. And he went back home. He told her, "I couldn't catch any fish the whole day. But I caught a beautiful fish when I was about to go back home. That fish begged me to release her, so I did." He told her everything. His wife got angry after listening to him. She said, "How idiotic you are! Don't you know that we have nothing to eat? Why did you release it? Now we have nothing! Go catch it again." The next day, he went there again. At that time, the fish appeared and swam near him. It said, "Grandpa, what do you want? What do you need?" He said, "Let me ask my wife what we need." He went back home and told his wife everything what the fish said. The wife said, "We need food and a house. Go and tell her about it." Then, the old man went there and said to the fish what his wife said. He said, "We need food to eat and a house to live in." It said, "Alright, you can go back home. I will give you everything you need. You will get everything even before you reach home." Then, the old man went back home. He could see a new house before he arrived home. At home, there was plenty of food. He witnessed food inside his new house. He was so happy to see his new house. He was honest and contended, but the wife was greedy. She told him, "Go and ask for more tomorrow. We need many other things." He asked her, "What shall I ask for?" She said, "We need money to spend and clothes to wear." The old man went there the next day and said, "My wife said that we needed clothes to wear and money to spend." The fish said, "Okay, I will give you what you need. You will get those things before you get home." He went back home then. They felt over the moon. The next day, the old woman told her husband, "Go ask for another things." Then, he went to the lake again. His wife told him to say, "We have got a house, money, food and clothes. But we still lack of beauty. Tell the fish to make us young like when we were youth." The old man went there. He asked the fish to make them young and beautiful. The fish also fulfilled their wish. The old man turned into a handsome young boy as soon as he arrived home. He became a handsome young boy again. The old woman also turned into a beautiful young lady. They were so happy. Later, the greedy woman told her husband, "We have got everything now. So, just ask the fish to give us the power to fulfill the wishes." She said like that. Then, the man went to the lake and said to the fish about it. The fish said, "Oh, you are too greedy. I gave you everything you needed, even more. But you don't know how to be content. Now, you want the power to fulfill wishes! Since today, I will take everything back from you. You two will have to spend your lives as poorly as before." When the fish said that to him, he went back home unhappily. When he arrived home, there was nothing. They became old again. Everything was taken back. They had to live their lives as poorly as before. They had to spend their lives poorly because of greed.
