Description: | Translation (Seng Pan) I will tell you about a girl from Danai (it's a town in Kachin State, in the northernmost part of Myanmar). A girl from Tarung village in Danai town planted poppy for a living with her family in Tarung Hkahku. Not only them but also the whole village did poppy field there. They moved to the field from the time they started planting poppy. When it was time to scrape off, the girl disappeared. Her parents were so worried and looked for her everywhere. Although how hard they searched her, they didn't find her anywhere. The parents considered their daughter was dead. So, they held worship for her. Since it was the time that they believed in spirits, they also made offerings to them with a dedication to their daughter. After five or six years, the girl came back home. Then, the mother said, "My dear, we thought you were dead. We all are in sorrow. We did offerings to spirits and also hold worship for you. How did you come back?" The mother was so happy and hugged her from the stairs. The girl answered, "Mom, I am married. Now I came back to you to give my bride price." "To give a bride price! Where is your husband? Didn't he come with you?" the mother asked. "He is pretty busy. He sent me to the water's edge. We crossed the Tarung river and he dropped me off there. I walked home from there. Your son-in-law also pulled some buffaloes from Tarung river. Look at the front! These are for the bride price," the girl replied. When the mother looked at the front, she just saw the barking deers. Their horns were so long and curvy. And they were lying down. Then the mother said, "Dear, the animals you pulled for the bride price are not buffaloes. They are barking deers." The girl said, "Mom, they are not barking deers. Look at them carefully! They are buffaloes. Your visions may be tricked." When the mother looked at the front again, she saw the buffaloes this time. Since the daughter gave them the bride price, they gave the chillies as a gift. Then the girl said, "Mom, please don't give me anything. I have all. I came here only to give you my bride price." And she didn't accept any presents from her parents. After three days, the girl said, "Mom, I need to go back now." The mother replied, "I will send you then. I also want to visit your place." "You will not be able to reach there, mom," the girl replied. And the girl left. The mother could only watch her daughter's back. When the girl arrived near the river, she couldn't be seen walking anymore. Her husband brought her along. A long time ago, while she was working in a poppy field, a nat (a male evil spirit) brought her along. She was taken along near Tarung river. She reached the world of nat without walking. The girl also told her mother that she got married appropriately. However, she married a nat. She was brought along to the world of nat from Tarung river. After the girl had lived there for three or four years, she visited her parents again. The girl said, "Mom, this time, I am here to show you, my baby." Since her husband and in-law family were nats, they were so rich. They could get everything. They just need to name it. So, the girl also brought a lot of money and jewelleries. The girl's baby was wrapped in many layers. The mother said, "Dear, let me look at your baby!" The girl replied, "Mom, don't look at it. He is sleeping. If you unwrap him, he will cry loudly." The mother said, "I haven't heard him yet. The baby should cry. He should make some noise." "When he is moved, he would cry so loud. Wrap him warmly and let him take a rest. Please don't touch him, mom," the girl requested. However, the mother was still eager to look at her grandson. She insisted, "No. I want to see it. You said you came here to show your baby. We must see him. How could you go back without showing our grandson?" When the time girl went out to fetch the water, the mother looked at the baby slyly. She saw that the baby's mouth was like an ogre's. He had many canines. His nose was also not normal. It was so pointed. The baby's face was not like a human's. He had canines too. The mother was so shocked and unconscious. When the girl arrived back home, she saw her mother was unconscious. She suddenly realized that her mother already looked at her baby. So, she left home urgently even without saying goodbye to her mother. Transcription (Lu Awng) Ya ngai tsun na lam gaw danai ga na num langai mi na lam re.
