Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) I am going to tell you about the division of Kachin people because of Manau posts. In the past, there weren't these kinds of colourful Manau posts. There were no patterns on them too. There weren't any symbols of birds or dragons. In the past, we set seven wooden posts on the ground and danced Manau dance together. When one of the villagers died, all the other villagers danced Manau dance to show grief. When we danced Manau dance in the past, we danced in front of those seven posts. A man, who knew much about space, looked at the Manau posts and thought seven Manau posts represented seven ethnicities of Kachin people. He assumed that. So, he asked the elders from the village, "Are there seven ethnicities of Kachin people?" They replied, "No. We are just a small group of people. It is difficult for us to have many ethnicities." Then, the man asked them, "I am asking you because I am curious. Why do you set seven posts then? Why do you use seven posts without setting eight or nine posts?" He asked them the question because he was curious. When people performed Manau dance in other places, he learned that it was okay even if the chiefs (Manau dance leaders) made some mistakes. But in this village, Manau dance leaders couldn't make a mistake while performing Manau dance. When the Manau dance leaders performed the dance in a bird shape or wings, everyone had to follow them. While they were performing, the Manau dance leaders couldn't make any mistakes. When they turned left at the place where they needed to turn right, everyone would just follow them. The Manau posts had their own history as well. If the Manau dance leaders made a mistake, they would be dead. So, it was really difficult to find people who would lead the Manau dance. If they could find the Manau dance leaders, they taught them well how to lead the dance. One day, there was heavy rain, lightning and thunder before they performed the Manau dance. There was a thunderstorm, and lightning struck the Manau posts. Then, all the Manau posts were flying in different directions. The man who knew much about the space named each post and gave it to seven people. He gave one Manau post to a person and said, "Here, you will be Zi (an ethnicity of Kachin race)," and gave the rest to other people. There were no patterns on those Manau posts, but Kachin people didn't use them anymore. We use the Manau posts with beautiful patterns. It is like we abandon our culture. So, I believe we should value our culture from the past and revitalize it.
