Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) I am going to tell you about how Mali clan has existed. A long time ago, there was a family who didn't have a surname. The villagers valued having a surname. If a family didn't have a surname, they couldn't live in that village. They would be driven out. There were many clans such as Lahtaw or Udi Chyang Maja in that village. But there was one family who didn't belong to any clan. Then, the chiefs asked them, "What is your family name?" They said, "We don't know our ancestors' family name. We don't know." The chiefs said, "Okay. We will give you four months to think about your family name. If you can't think of your family name, we will drive you away from this village!" The family was depressed. At home, they searched for their family history, but they couldn't find their family name in the book too. Then, the wife told her husband, "We couldn't find our surname yet. Let's just go and beg the chiefs." He was depressed and said, "We can't. They won't pass it easily." They kept finding their surname in the book, but they couldn't find it. It had already been four months. Then, the villagers drove them away. The family didn't have any place to live, so they moved to the place near Mali Hka (river) and Nmai Hka (river) and lived there. They grew some vegetables and paddies for their living. The wife thought to herself, "Our lives are so miserable. We need to have a surname not to be treated badly." She was sitting alone beside the river and thinking about it. One day, she told her husband, "My darling, we need to have a surname. Help me think of the surname." He also thought about what to name their family name. But he was out of the idea. He got angry and told her, "Don't talk about surname now. We have already been driven away from the village because we don't have a family name. What is the point even though we have one now?" She said, "No, my husband. Not having a family name is a shame. It doesn't matter whether we have another chance to live in the village or not. We should have a family name." He asked her, "Which family name do you prefer to have?" She thought for a while and said, "Since we live near the confluence of Mali Hka and Nmai Hka, let's have our family name as 'Mali'." Then, he thought about it for three days and three nights. He thought, "Is there any family whose family name is Mali?" There was no family name like that in the village indeed. The wife told him, "My darling, there is no family name as Mali. So, let's have it as our family name." He agreed with her, "Okay. Our family name will be Mali start from today. Go and tell the chiefs that we have a family name now." She ran to the chiefs and said, "My lord, we have a family name now. Our family name is Mali. We let you know first to show our respect and to announce it." The chiefs agreed and let them announce their family name in the village. Since then, there is a family name called Mali. They took the name of the river and named their family name. We can see that there are some people whose family name is Mali. It is all because of Mali Hka (river). This is how Mali (family name) has existed.
