Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) I will tell you a story about how a bird of ill omen had become. Once in a village, two men went somewhere to trade. They didn't get along with each other. It was dark when they went back to their village. There was an old abandoned village on the way. One man suggested his friends sleep there. Then the other man said, "No one sleeps in this kind of village. Let's sleep at the cemetery." The first man said, "I won't sleep at the cemetery. I will just sleep here." They were separated. One slept at the cemetery, and the other one slept at the old village. At midnight, the demons came to the house where the first man was sleeping. The demons were about to dance. Then he felt scared. In the past, everyone understood what others said. When the demons detected the human's scent and attempted to locate him, he became terrified. The number of demons was getting bigger. In the end, they caught him and ate his body. Only his head was left. On the other hand, the man who was sleeping at the graveyard survived. The nats from the graveyard said, "Let's go to the old village and dance together there." The spirit from the tomb where the man was sleeping said, "I can't. I have a guest tonight." Then, they said, "Okay. Then we will go there now." The nat couldn't go there since she had a guest. The man who was sleeping at the cemetery survived. The next morning, his friend, who had only a head, followed him and said, "Wait for me. Let's go back together." But he didn't wait and ran away. And he shouted, "I told you to sleep at the cemetery last night! Why didn't you listen to me?" His friend kept following him, and he kept running away from him too. They were getting tired. So, the man who slept at the graveyard climbed the tree in order to escape. His friend, who had only his head, was also waiting for him at the foot of the tree. Then, the man who was sitting on the tree died of hunger. And he became a bird of ill omen. When a bird of ill omen made a sound, we can also hear the sound at the foot of the tree. It was made by the man who slept in the old village. Therefore, we need to sleep together when we travel somewhere. No one slept at the old village or on the tree when we travelled in the past, but we slept at the cemetery. This is about how we had to behave when we travelled in the past.
