Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Our Kachin people hold a naming ceremony when a baby is born. The reason why we hold a naming ceremony is like this. In the past, the nat spirits lived together in a place. When humans had a naming ceremony, the nats went there. And they named the baby. They gave names to every baby. One day, one nat spirit went to a naming ceremony. He was exhausted on the way, so he took a nap under the tree. Meanwhile, the other nats also heard that there was a naming ceremony. Therefore, they went there. On their way, they saw the nat who was sleeping under the tree. That nat told them, "You go there. I think I can't go there since I have a guest tonight." When they arrived at the naming ceremony, people were keeping silent. The nats didn't give any names or didn't bless the baby too. Later, they just went back. On their way back, they met the old nat who was sleeping at first. The old nat asked them, "How is it? Did you give a name to the baby?" They said, "People didn't say anything to us. They didn't tell us to give a name to the baby." Then, the old nat just said, "Hmmm, okay." Later, he went to that house again because people still didn't give any names to the baby. People didn't give a name to the newborn baby. The baby had to live without a name. If the old nat didn't sleep under the tree or came to give a name, the baby would be possessed by the nat. The baby might die too. Kachin people were afraid of that, so we treated dried meat, ginger, salt and chilli at a naming ceremony. Kachin people treated those kinds of food at a naming ceremony. We need to name a baby before a nat does, so that the baby won't be possessed by the nat. The Kachin people, from flat land to hills and mountains, hold a naming ceremony when a baby is born. When a person doesn't have the same attitude as Kachin people, we call him as 'he is the person who didn't have a naming ceremony when he was born.'
