Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Long time ago, there was a wealthy family which had three daughters and two parents. It was a wealthy and happy family. One day, the parents tested the daughters. The parents wanted to know how much their daughters loved them. The parents called their three daughters and asked, "How much do you love us?" The elder daughter answered, "I love you two as much as I love gold". The parents were very happy over the answer of the elder daughter. Everyone admires the gold. The elder daughter praised the parents as gold. Her parents were so happy and said to the elder daughter, "Excellent! We are really glad to hear that." And they asked the second daughter, "How much do you love us?" The second daughter answered, "I love you two as much as money." The parents said, "That's good to hear." They were happy. They liked the two daughters' answers so much. Then, they asked the youngest daughter, "How much do you love us?" The youngest daughter answered, "My answer is not like the eldest sister and the second sister. I love you as much as salt." When they heard the answer of the youngest daughter, they were hurt and sad. But they didn't show their emotions and acted like nothing happened. The parents were really sad in their inner mind although they did not show the emotions. The parents were wondered, "How could she say that she loves us as much as the salt!?" Then they gave a bag of money and a horse to the youngest daughter. And they said, "Ride this horse and follow wherever it goes. You must not control the horse to stop. And you must stay at the place where the horse stops even if there are many difficulties." The youngest daughter said, "Okay! I accept that." Then she took the money, rode the horse and set forth. The horse passed the mountains, and the way was very far from her family. She and the horse travelled about three days. In the evening of the third day, they reached at a shanty house from a deserted village. The horse entered the house and stopped there. No matter how hard she tried to move the horse, it didn't move forward at all. When she looked around the place, there was no one. Later, she fell asleep since she was exhausted. She slept soundly. There was a poor man who grew yam for the daily bread. He lived there alone. When he got home in the evening, he found a horse and a girl who was sleeping. He woke the girl up and asked, "Why did you sleep here? I am so poor. I can't give you anything. Don't stay here!" She answered, "No, I must stay here." She told everything about what had happened to her. The boy said, "Okay then. Stay if you want." He said, "I am very poor and I cannot feed you anything." So, they used the money which the girl got from her parents. And they exchanged the food with that money. However, all her money were spent. They didn't have any money. In one evening, the boy felt really itchy on his head. He asked the girl, "My head is very itchy. Can you check it?" When she checked his head, she saw the bright and sparkling things like sand. She said, "Oh! There are many pieces of gold affixing on your head." He couldn't differentiate whether that is gold or not since he was poor and he hadn't seen gold before. He said, "Oh! Really? Is it gold? There are many pieces of that kind of objects in the field where I grow yam." Then, she said, "Oh! Really? I will follow you tomorrow." The next morning, they two went to the farm where the boy was farming. When they reached at the field, there were really pieces of gold in a heap like a sandy bank. Then, they fenced the field securely because they didn't want the others to know about that. They picked up those pieces gold and sold them. After that, they built a mansion and appointed the housekeepers and servants. They lived happily. As time passed by, the girl missed her family too. When they threw a house-warming party, the girl invited her parents too. They invited the parents and celebrated the party. They could wealthily live with servants and housekeepers. On that day, the girl said to her servants, "You can cook delicious curries for everyone who comes to the ceremony. But don't put even a bit of salt in the dishes for my parents." Then, her parents also came to the party on that day. The boy and the girl worshipped and prayed GOD for giving the blessings. And the banquet time had arrived. The other people enjoyed the curries so much. And they went back home. On the other hand, a special meal was prepared for her parents. The parents ate the meal then. Actually, she was testing her parents. She asked, "Mom and dad, how is the meal? Is it delicious?" Her parents answered, "The curries look really delicious, but all the curries are lack of salt." Then, she said, "Many years ago, I told you how much I love you. The reason why I said like that is that I understand how important the salt is for every curry. But you didn't understand and drove me away." Her parents were sorry and sad. They died right at that place. Finally, the girl called her two elder sisters to her mansion and lived happily with them.
