Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This is not only a story but also a real event that actually happened in Kachin, many years ago. I would like to tell you a bit about something relating with Nat spirits that really exists in Kachin people (history). There was a mountain spirit who ruled the mountain in Danai (a city) in the area of Hugawng plain. One day, that mountain spirit took a Kachin girl called Chyinglap Ja Hpa. That mountain spirit took the girl and, he started a family with that girl. Then, she had got a child after getting married to that mountain spirit. That mountain spirit also pretended to be a human and they went to the human society. And also, they lived on the land of Nat spirits. While they had been living like that, one day they threw a birthday party (as the way of Nat spirit) for their child. They celebrated a Nat festival. When they made a birthday festival in accordance with Nat history, they put a child in the middle of people (public). They put the baby in the middle of the people by covering with fabric. As people are the kind of creatures who want to do more if someone tells them not to do, people want to look more if someone tells them not to look. And human is such a curious (creature). That Nat and that girl said to people who came to the party not to look at the baby, and then they covered the baby and (put the baby) in the middle of the people. When the baby was covered with fabric, as they were human and they really wanted to look, (they thought) "Umm, they told us not to look. What kind of child is that?" (But) people really wanted to look at that child, so they sneaked a peek at the baby. When people saw that baby, that baby didn't look like human since he was the baby of mountain spirit (Nat) and human mother. That baby's eyes and nose were not in the right place where they had to be. People were so scared. Then that mountain spirit (Nat) was so angry too. That mountain spirit was so angry. Later, that mountain spirit took Chyinglap Ja Hpa to his Nat land and never took her back to where human lived. They lived in the place where he (Nat spirit) lived, the mountain where he (Nat spirit) ruled. And there was a big cave on that mountain. In the past, during the times when the Japanese ruled Myanmar and many foreign people arrived in Myanmar, they saw that cave. And they thought why this kind of big cave was on the mountain and they checked that. And when they took a look at that cave, what they saw was that there was a woman whose hair was too long and she combed her hair by sitting. Our ancestors thought she might be Chyinglap Ja Hpa and that might be the place where she lived. Even though Hugawng plain is a place where lots of Chyinglap (edible herb with thorns) grow, there don't grow any Chyinglap on that mountain (where the mountain spirit and Chyinglap Ja Hpa lived). There don't grow any Chyinglap. We, people called that mountain as the mountain where Chyinglap Ja Hpa lived. This is a real event that happened and till now people talk about them. I just would like to tell about it.
