Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) When Sara Kurabe Keita comes here and said that he was interested in Kachin stories, I have a collection of stories and will tell you some. I will tell you the stories. I am Gawn Awng. My pen name is Hkasha Uma Awng, aka Hkasha Tin Awng. I live in No (322), Du Ka Htawng quarter, Myitkyina. I will tell you Kachin stories now. Once upon a time, there was a hunter. He hunted the animals the whole day, but he didn't get any. He got only a tortoise and a chameleon. And he went back home. He couldn't reach home because it was getting dark. In the middle of the forest, there was an old house that no one lived in. Then, he went there and slept for a night. He was scared to sleep in that house. So, he climbed up the ceiling and slept there. Soon, a group of nats came into that house and danced the death dance. The hunter didn't know that the nats were dancing. The nats knew that there was a human because they got the scent of a human. One asked, "Do you get the smell of a human?" The other nats said, "Yes, we get the smell of a human." The hunter was frightened when he heard them saying that. Some nats wanted to find the human, while some just wanted to dance the death dance. Kabung Dum is a kind of dance people dance when someone dies. We dance the death dance at a funeral house by using three gongs. They were dancing while singing, "What are you afraid of? I am afraid of thunder and lightning." One nat sang, "What are you afraid of?" Another nat replied, "I am afraid of thunder and lightning." And they were dancing. He took his dried chameleon and scratched it hard. It made a sound like 'Hkrawk, hkrawk, hkrawk'. The nats were frightened and said, "There is a thunder!" Then, the hunter made the sound again by scratching the dried chameleon. The nats were scared out of their wits. But they kept dancing. The hunter didn't know what to do. Then, he dropped the tortoise down to the floor. The tortoise hit the floor and produced a loud sound. The nats were shouting, "The thunder is striking!" And they all ran away. They forgot all of their belongings such as necklaces, bracelets and gongs. They were afraid of light too. The next morning, there were no nats in that house. He took those and went back home. In his village, there was another hunter. He wanted to own those things too. He asked the first hunter, "How did you get those gongs and necklaces?" The first man told him everything without hiding any facts. Then, the second hunter searched for a tortoise and a chameleon in the forest too. He didn't hunt any animals because he was not interested in hunting anymore. He only wanted the valuable gongs and necklaces. Like the first hunter, he found that old house too. While he was sleeping on the ceiling, the nats were coming. The nats said, "There is the scent of human here." The hunter was scared when he heard them saying. But they continued their death dance. At that time, the man tried to scratch the dried chameleon like the first man. But the sound 'hkrawk, hkrawk' didn't come out. Since the chameleon was not dried, the sound didn't come out. The nats were getting the strong scent of humans, so they were eager to find the man and eat him. When he took the tortoise out to drop, it was stabbed by a sharp pointed wood and died. There was a sharp pointed wood like a pole under the ceiling. When he dropped the tortoise down, it was stabbed by that sharp wood and died. Then, the nats knew that it was not the sound of thunder. They climbed up the ceiling and killed him. They ate him. He didn't get anything in the end and just lost his life. We shouldn't be greedy over the things that other people own. We can't be jealous over them.
