Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The title of the story is 'Twins'. A long time ago, there were a mother and her daughter in a village. The girl was a fatherless child. Since they were poor, they were not allowed to do farming on a big farm. They had to farm at the outskirt of the village. One day, the girl was pregnant. She gave birth to twin boys: Ma Gam and Ma Naw. The boys grew up well. They became young men. When they visited the village, the villagers told them, "You don't have a father! Such fatherless twins!" When they talked to the girls, the girls told them, "How dare fatherless twins to talk to us!" They looked down at the twins. Wherever they went, they were looked down. The boys were upset and told their mother about it. They told her, "Mom, we are being looked down upon wherever we go. When we talk to boys and girls from the village, they say that fatherless twins like us shouldn't talk to them. They always look down on us. So, can you tell us who our father is?" The mother said, "I can't tell who your father is." The twins insisted on asking who their father was. They told her, "Mom, our lives are meaningless. Wherever we go, we are looked down. So, what's the point of being alive in this world? Even the life of the animal is meaningful. Please, tell us." In the end, she decided to tell them about their father. She said, "Take some iron and strike it beside a big lake. Strike it every day. At that time, your father will show up in front of you." They went to the big lake and stroke the iron beside it every day. They made an iron rope too. They said, "When our father shows up, let's tie him up with this rope." They were striking the iron without even taking a rest. Meanwhile, a giant snake in the lake felt unpleasant because of the noises. It came out of the water and told them, "Please, don't strike the iron anymore. I feel really dizzy because of that sound." But the twins continued striking the iron. The snake thought of begging them not to do that anymore. When it came out of the water, the twins quickly caught it and tied its neck with the rope. It was afraid and said, "Why did you do this kind of action to me? Release me right now. Don't you know that animals like dragons and me are scared of iron? Now, I am going to die because of you." The boys said, "You made our mom pregnant and left her alone. We are your sons. You made us feel outcast. If you can't promise us what we want, we won't release you! We will kill you with this iron rope despite the fact you are our father." The father said, "Yes, I am your father. I did really wrong to your mother. I am so sorry." The twins said, "But you make us feel outcast among people. If you can't do something good for us, we will not let you go. We will hang you here till you die. If you are not dead yet, we will come to this lake every year and strike the iron loudly." Their father said, "Don't do that, please. Release me, please. I will give you a valuable stone. It can make your lives perfect. It can fulfill your wishes. It can bring you success in everything you do. You will get recognition and favour from other people if you have this stone. I am just a snake, but I will give you this valuable stone in my head. But you can't break this stone. Take turns bringing the stone." The boys said, "Then, spit it out quickly! If you don't, we will kill you." It said, "Don't kill me, please. I will give it to you." Then, it spat the stone out. The boys said politely after getting the stone, "Dad, we have known who you really are now. Since you are a snake and we are humans, we can't be together. This is the farewell for us. We will live our lives happily with your priceless gift. Goodbye, dad." The girls, who hated them at first, liked them now. The twins became rich by the gift of their father. They lived happily forever. This is the end of the story. Transcription (La Ring) Ya marun yen nau na lam hpe ga baw gaw marun yen nau. Lani na aten hta e num shayi sha gaw jahkrai ma re.
