Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The title of the story is 'paddy that is running away'. Once upon a time, a man became chief in a village. He owned a lot of rice. He and his family kept the rice they got this year for the next year. They had a lot of rice to eat. The chief had many servants. He had chefs, cleaners, and farmers who worked for him. When his servants pounded the rice, they did it carelessly. They put the mortar wherever they wanted. They spilt a lot of grains over the floor. And the chefs threw the cookers and pots when they cooked rice. When the cooker was not filled with water after eating cooked rice, they kicked the pot and blamed each other. When they planted the rice plants, they carelessly did it. They often planted the rice by using knives or sickles. They carelessly planted the rice. The chief's ancestors were wealthy. They could live better lives. But now, the chief was getting poor because of his reckless servants. He didn't get many grains too. They didn't even have enough rice for this year. Then, the chief was upset about it. He was wondering why this happened. He made a basket to put the rice in. His servants threw the grains into it. When they took some grains to cook, they took them out carelessly. There was Hkrang River near their village. There was a village called Htinglu Yang on the other side of the river. One day, a strange noise like a swarm of bees buzzing occurred. The sound was like a swarm of bees buzzing. In fact, it was the sound coming out from the rice plants. Unbelievably, the rice grains flew into a widow's house from Htinglu Yang village. Then, she had a basket full of rice grains. The villagers saw that thing. Meanwhile, the chief was looking at the rice pot and there was nothing in it. And there were just a few in another rice pot. So, he was depressed and upset. The chief's servants were saying that their grains were missing day after day. The villagers came to the chief and said, "Our respected chief, the rice grains are flying towards the widow's house from Htinglu Yang village. When her family was alive, they had a big rice basket. She still has it, and it was full of rice grains. The rice grains were flying into her basket." The chief said, "They will definitely be my grains. How could the grains fly to her and fill her basket?" He was reflecting on himself day and night. The next day, he said, "Since the rice grains do not want to stay in my house, let it be. My servants don't respect the grains. When they pound or toss grains on the tray or cook them, they don't respect the grains and do their jobs carelessly. The grains are alive and essential in our lives, but my servants couldn't treat them carefully. So, the grains ran away from us. I have become poor. Even though I am the chief of this village, I have faced failure because of my careless servants." He went to the widow and said, "My grains flew into your rice basket. But I will not ask for those grains. Since they want to stay in your basket, let them be. Why did you make such a big basket?" The widow said, "When my family was alive, they made this big basket. After they died, I couldn't grow many rice plants. I grow the rice plants as I can do with my strength. But I treat them carefully. I don't make noises in my kitchen. I don't throw the pots and plates too. I never spill the rice. I don't throw the leftover rice too. I treat the rice carefully." After hearing what she said, the chief said, "You have plenty of rice grains because of your actions. You treat them carefully. So, they want to stay in your house. I will not ask for the grains from you." This is the end of the story. Transcription (La Ring) Mam hprawng ai lam ga baw gaw mam hprawng ai lam.
