Description: | Translation (Seng Pan) This story is about how the tigers got black stripes. A long time ago, the tigers were stunning with fair hair. But now, the tigers are with black stripes, and they are not so stunning as before. This story tells how it changed. One day, Hkanghtang Mangbya (an animal was named Hkanghtang Mangbya since it always lied to other animals) and a tiger went on a journey together. In the previous story, the tiger got really angry at Hkanhtang Mangbya because he ate the tiger's meal. And the tiger wanted to kill him whenever he saw him. So, Hkanghtang Mangbya had escaped from him, but at last, the tiger could catch him. At that moment, Hkanghtang Mangbya said, "My friend, please don't kill me! Killing me would cause a significant loss for you. So, please don't kill me now. I have been drumming a gong. This is a powerful gong. If you hit it, you may live long. I am already a dead creature. It's useless for me now. I will let you play this." Since the tiger was stupid, he replied, "Then, don't play it. I will spare your life. Let me drum this gong!" In that case, Hkanghtang Mangbya happily replied, "Certainly! I will let you drum my gong." Actually, Hkanghtang Mangbya let him play a beehive which was in a tree. When the tiger also drummed it strongly, the bees stung him on his face. At that moment, Hkanghtang Mangbya ran away. The tiger also chased after him in anger. His face was already swelled up. At last, he could catch Hkanghtang Mangbya in a village. Again, Hkanghtang Mangbya begged him not to kill. "Please don't kill me yet. I will give you a precious stool. I will let you sit on it. This is a golden stool. As soon as you sit on it, you will become the king of tigers. I'll be killed soon, so I won't sit on it," Hkanghtang Mangbya enticed the tiger. The tiger also fell into his trap again. Hkanghtang Mangbya showed him a pile of cow shit. But there was a coil of thorn inside it. And Hkanghtang Mangbya said, "My friend, when you sit down, don't sit gently. You can throw yourself on it." So, the tiger did as he instructed. As he sat on the thorn, he felt so painful. Soon after, Hkanghtang Mangbya fled from the tiger. The tiger also ran after him. At a lake where the cows were drinking water, the tiger jumped into it. From that day on, the tigers have got scars and become ugly. Transcription (Lu Awng) Oh ra sharaw ni da teng teng pang pang byin ai le moi gaw sharaw gaw grai ah hpraw nsam nna grai tsawm ai re da.
