Description: | Exchanging "bride price (belis/barlake)". In this instance, which is probably typical, the exchange process called belis in the local Malay (barlake in Tetum) basically involves three parties: A) Lamberto and his male relatives (brothers, sons, newphews and grand-sons); B) Lamberto's sisters and their husbands; and C) the male relatives of Lamberto's wife (her brothers etc). A asks B to pay open debts incurred in the marriage process and basically passes on everything to C. C is generally not an active part in the recorded negotations but rather sits at the back of the house and listens for what A and B come up with (A and C have settled on what their respective debts are earlier on).____________________ The current negotiations are mostly concerned with a sword which is first rejected by A and then also by C, both claiming that the night before (obviously in informal prenegotiations) one had agreed to make a buffalo part of the deal and the sword is not of the quality which counts as a buffalo equivalent (as original swords from Makasar do, for example).____________ the recording starts some time in the middle of the exchange which has been going on for some time - it's ca. 7 o'clock Sunday morning, the speakers having been up all night (this recording follows /aldin_pesta/ which occurred about an hour earlier, says MB) no continuous recording but stop and go, especially the video recording; WMMBAC30NOV0202.wav stopped at 5:40, ca. 31:00 (more than half minute) | |
