Title:Why Dog Can No Longer Speak (Daniel Amai's Version)
0305-Why Dog Can No Longer Speak (Daniel Amai's Version)
Contributor:Daniel Amai
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:2013-01-12
Description:In the past, dogs were able to speak. One man raised a small dog. The man and the dog lived together. They spoke with each other, and were like father and son. They found a sprouting coconut and planted it. It grew big and bore fruit. One day the man told the dog to look after the coconut tree, and went off into the bush. When he came back he asked the dog if anyone had come. The dog told him that nobody had come. The next day the man went into the bush again. This time another man came to the settlement, and climbed the coconut tree. The dog shouted at him to come down. The man came down, but could not see who had shouted at him. Each time the man climbed the tree the same thing happened. Finally, the man scattered some ashes around the house. He climbed the tree again, and the dog shouted at him again. The man came down and saw dog's footprints in the ashes. He beat the dog so badly that the dog was no longer able to speak.
