Description: | This video was recorded in May 2010 during a field trip funded through a U.S. NSF project led by Jeff Good. Chief George starts "warming up" all those who will participate in the celebration of Bikang, which will take place the following night. This is made through inviting all the men present, one at a time, to share the ritual drink par excellence (i.e. palm wine fermented with honey). Chief George had a word for each one, and talked in Ngun or Cameroonian Pidgin English depending on the recipient's ability to understand Ngun. These talkscan last from half-minute to several minutes each, and can include both eulogies and criticisms, in case the addressee "deserves" them to the chief's eyes. | |
