Description: | This video was recorded in March 2010 during a field trip funded through a U.S. NSF project led by Jeff Good. The men of influence of Ngun have agreed on acting a typical Ekwe celebration, and this is the recording of that staged performance. This celebration is not held periodically but only in connection with special events, such as the "graduation" of a new member of the Ekwe society (whose members are the quarter heads plus the chief) or the approaching of serious threats requiring ritually-sanctioned discussion (i.e. through invocation of the ancestors). Chief George performs the ritual introduction and invocation to the ancestors. The ritual concluded with the performance of the Ekwe song led by Gabriel (head of Awin quarter). A good part of the chief's speech and non-verbal performances reflected the preoccupation to make clear that he is aware that this ritual is being staged for the whites and he knows how to "cool down" the soil (i.e. the ancestors) for this exceptional event. This is ensiree through a herbal concoction the chief first gives to all the onlookers and then throws on specfic spots of the ritual area. | |
