Description: | Gilberta Cruz Ortiz speaks two related short mythical historical narratives about experiences with loss of crops in the past. When Gilberta was young, a strange woman arrived at her house and was given accommodations. The visitor never showed her face and was sick. When she finally leaves, they see that up the hill the trees are sagging, laden with locusts. It is inferred that the woman was an omen of coming plague and that she transformed into the insects. The pests do not destroy the crops at that time, but in the second part of the recording Gilberta relates the time that locusts came and ate everything. It is inferred that the two episodes are linked. Audio duration [00:06:16] | |
