| Description: | Narges Askari is an 85 year old woman whose late father and late husband were sar-galesh (headmen among the Galesh). This means that they were well-off men whose property was their cows. She speaks about her life as a Galesh woman and about her talents to run everyday life in the village when her husband was away in the forests on the mountain slopes for months. In this text she tells of her memories and things she has accomplished in her life. She also gives an account of the present situation in the village, and we can from her story understand how the inhabitants of the village today are selling their agricultural land to get immediate benefits and without foreseeing the future. Contents of the text: Traditional marriage ceremonies as compared to the presentday situation, food at weddings, trousseau and mehrie (money stipulated in the marriage contract to be paid by the man to his wife upon demand or in case of divorce), how the virginity of the bride was checked, co-habitation of the young couple with the husband’s parents, change of lifestyle and the difficulty to live together nowadays as illustrated by the actual life of the linguistic consultant, divorce, remarriage, her own husband’s death and how she managed financially afterwards, her children’s marriage, division of her property between the children, her pilgrimage, how she sold land, her present living conditions, how to cook rice and other dishes, a discussion about how much a mann (traditional weight measure) is, agriculture and the need to guard the fields, her own experience as a field-guard, and, finally, who is a Galesh. | |
