Language Variation and Social Identity in Kanjimei, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea
Contributor:Vincent Kaŋgam
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:2004-07-23
Description:Pandi
In the faraway past when the Awiakay stayed at Kasom, Pandi thought he heard two cassowaries fighting. In fact, these were two spirits, Kayn and Papon, singing Supim [initiation song]. He hid away, but they saw him anyway, asking him not to be afraid. Papon turned into a stone that can still be seen at Amongao, while Kayn taught Pandi the songs., He told him he should always start with Aŋgwia [the starting cycle]. He taught him the songs of the afternoon, the songs of the sun and the songs of the night. He told him what food is to be tabooed and showed him how to prepare celebration when the boys come out of men’s house. He gave him a bundle of spears and Pandi travelled down, leaving one spear in each place, all the way to Manam. At Yimas he capsized a stove, so there’s now a hill in the middle of the lakes.
