Description: | Kombeng | |
Kombeŋ went to hunt, saw blood on the ground and called his wife to come along to search for the wounded pig. When they found it they cut it, wrapped it in the leaves, put it in the bilum and had sex. A spirit called Kombeŋ was watching them. The next day they made a raft and put all the meat on it, but spirit Kombeŋ held the man’s leg and wouldn’t let him go. The man told his wife Waŋgam to run away, and not care about him and the meat, just take some turtles for the children. She ran and half way to the village she heard big thunder, knowing that the spirits took her husband under the water. The next day the men from the village went to search for him. Turtles gave him Kombeŋ’s body and urged them to bury him before the water spirits find out. The spirits returned with the greens to eat with Kombeŋ’s body, but found that it was gone. They turned to the turtles who were rubbed with ashes in mourning and started fighting them. The turtles farted, as they do. The spirits followed the smell of Kombeŋ’s dead body and found the place where he was buried. They took his rotting body and ate it, and wanted to destroy the place. People heard the noise and went to see what was happening. The path they followed is now a dry creek, always full of fish. | ||
