| The water carried away a girl’s little brother when she was looking after him. When the family returned, they all beat her up till she was just a pile of dust. This dust was put on a leaf and when the sun heated it, she woke up again. She went to dive to search for her little brother. The spirits of the water had taken him. Waraita came back and told her family that he was still alive, so they all donated food to take to the spirits who then returned the child. Waraita left her parents, went to stay with two spirits and turned into a banana tree every time they came home. Eventually she’s discovered and marries one of the spirits. Another, giant spirit comes to tell her that her parents are looking for her. He comes to eat sago every day. Waraita tells the other twos spirits how to trap him, and when he’s killed, his skull remains in the creek. When women go fishing one of them catches a skull and thinks it’s a baby, but when she wants to breastfeed it, the skull bites her breast. They raise it on sago grubs, but when they are away, the ‘baby’ becomes a giant and eats all the food. When he’s discovered, the women trick him and burn him in the house. | ||
