Description: | This project is a part of PhD dissertation fieldwork, supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (IGS00166). The dissertation itself will focus on evidentiality in the language, but the documentation aims to encompass as broad a set of linguistic and cultural practices as possible. Most interviews were carried out by native Kichwa researchers, and are therefore monolingual in Kichwa. The topics addressed cover the recent history of the Amazonian Kichwa, folktales, everyday life and ceremonies.
This session was run within shooting the short film about Runa medicinal plants, similarly to the one from the day before with Carolina Grefa (in_05092014). This interview was with Arturo Chimbo, who took us to the forest, and wanted to show us quite a few plants, but in the end we decided on 'sangre de drago' (Kichwa name escapes me, but is mentioned in the video) and the medicinal/anestethic properties of unripe papaya fruit. On the way Arturo also showed us other useful plants, quite a few of which were used as painkillers. To film the papaya, we went to the chagra area beside the Napo river ('isla'), and the papaya tree we filmed was actually in the chagra of Saida Chimbo. The footage of plants will be included in the video, which will be archived separately. This bundle includes two interviews with Arturo, made after we came back from the forest and filmed the processes. It was a Saturday so it was quite noisy (adventist mass), and his home was also not an option because his wife was cooking and making quite a lot of noise, so school seemed like the best location. The footage is more cinematic then usual documentation would be, as the interviewer (Nilo) was sitting next to the camera, and the interviewee was lit with an additional LED pannel. John and Pablo can be heard talking as well - John was responsible for monitoring whether the interview included all the important information. The content of the files is as follows: in_06092014_01 interview about 'sangre de drago' in_06092014_02 interview about the papaya The accompanying eafs contain transcription and translation into Spanish.
