| Description: | This first recording in the community of Tolontag represents the rare Valle de los Chillos sub-dialect. The man in the recording was a fluent speaker but his wife was more of a passive Quichua speaker. The recording begins with a narrative of labor conditions during the times of the haciendas, doing agricultural work with an ox plow and other tasks. Later, the narrative turns to current situations, including medical issues that according to the narrator keep him from working the way he used to when he was younger. Phonological features include reduction of diphthongs as in “chay” > “chi” and widespread voicing of obstruents. | |
| Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers. | ||
