| Description: | This conversation with a couple from Mulintimí begins with a description of agricultural practices, products, and economics, the husband mentioning how new roads make transport of products easier. Then the wife tells some of her life history from when she was growing up in the nearby community of Salamálag, and moving to Mulintimí eventually, but all six of their children have migrated to other larger towns in the area. At one point in the recording the couple’s daughter and granddaughter leave, as does Floyd, and their son-in-law continues with the conversation in a more natural, less interview-like style, until everyone returns at the end. | |
| Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers. | ||
