| Description: | In this recording Miguel from Otavalo speaks with two women from La Chimba, a mother and a daughter. The daughter’s Kichwa is passive but the mother speaks fluent kichwa. She tells about how her husband recently passed away. This topic occasions a discussion of the “chunguy” games traditionally played in the area at funerals. They go on to describe some unique local games called playing “condor” and “onion”. Around 6:00 some ideophones “talag” can be heard, and just before 7:00 “uzhi uzhi”. Later the discussion turns to the history of the famous local leader Tránsito Amaguana, who the women knew personally. The discussion continues through a number of different topics. | |
| Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers. | ||
