Description:The beginning of this recording with a brother and sister from Guantug Grande begins with a discussion of typical greetings, with titles like “tio” and “tia” or “cholo” and “cholo”, tipping the hat, shaking hands, and so on. The woman tells an emotional story of hardship when she was growing up, raising guinea pigs in order to survive. Some toponyms like Miraflores (they don’t speak Kichwa there), Salamalag, Chilla Grande, Chaluapamba and Calera. Traditional thatch huts appear in the background of the shot. Towards the end of the recording there is a discussion of some rope made out of sigsig fiber, and it is possible to observe how the columns of the house are sticks wrapped thatch bound with in sigsig fibers. The pronunciation of “chawar” for the agave plant can be heard, and a few other botanical terms.
Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers.
Sessions include conversation and activities, semi-structured in collaboration with participants.
