| Description: | This second session of the day in Tigua was recording with another couple who work in traditional handcrafts. They are among the first families to develop the handcraft industry from the traditional masks and drum paintings used for the Corpus Christi and similar festivals. They tell about the community history, and pioneer Julio Toaquiza, who was one of the first to sell to well-known handcraft merchant Olga Fisch in Quito. The second part of the recording moves inside the shop when it starts to rain, and it is possible to see the interior. The woman’s extended narrative about her life history in this part tells details of how they worked in previous years and has some good examples characteristic local dialect features like -sh as a reduced form of -shpa (same referent) and also -pash (also), “ashpa” for “earth”, and lexicon like “illis” (all). The final part of the video includes a clip of one of the daughters of the family cooking guinea pigs on spits over a fire for sale to people stopping at the shop. | |
| Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers. | ||
